Most people know of Mesopotamia's ancient art, but a new show at Bard College's Hessel Museum highlights the almost forgotten range of Baghdad's modern art movement, many works of which were lost during & after the 2003 U.S. invasion:

Review | A look at the beauty of Baghdad’s modern art — and the cultural cost of war
Much of Iraq’s modern art vanished after the U.S. invaded. A show of Baghdad’s 20th-century modernists helps fill in the record.

Grading essays may seem like a trek at times, but it’s also rewarding. I came across a paper where a student related personal anecdotes in response to reading Egyptian primary sources. It was powerful and their response offered up new questions and perspectives to think about the material.

What stage of democratic breakdown is it when corporate CEO's have to favor the president with personal gifts in order to ensure favorable treatment from the government?

If a student ever asks me again why we should not separate the ancient from modern history of a country, this is a great study for why.

Eager to paint Howard Carter as a hero, Egyptology has been slow to confront the open secret of his thefts from the tomb (except when one US collector/‘mummy’ expert wanted to publicise his 2022 book…). This article lays it out clearly: will the July 27th auction of this item go ahead? 📜🏺🗃️

Mr. Carney, I came across this highly problematic behaviour by Liberal Staffers in Ottawa and I am hoping you would take action against ensuring this would never happen again. Such behaviour reflects poorly on the Liberal Party and this should never be tolerated.

Thought-provoking article on how we make sense of “Prehistory”. The authors touch really well on the complexity and opt for the term “Deep History” instead:

Picture my excitement 😃 as I approached. And then picture my reaction when I had a closer look 😭😭 - it’s obv not lapis-lazuli. Just a dark blue coloured fake boulder with metallic-looking patches. Come on!

I am shocked and beyond words. Aside from ON Government knowing for months and doing nothing about it, the news of the closure of the Science Centre is a huge, huge loss to the city's cultural make-up, especially for children. Horrendous decision and reflects poorly on our city!
