Self-loathing furry, dejected ML expert doing bad C programming
I played in a Star Trek RPG once, and I insisted on wearing a spacesuit every time we beamed down to a planet. Eventually the GM yelled at me, "come on, man, you have to allow the plot to happen."

One of the trivial answers to this question is just "because the shit you want to learn eventually builds on the shit I'm teaching you now." Oh, you don't like pointer/array symmetry in C? But you'd like to learn OpenGL programming, yeah? Well, I have bad news...

The Devil Within: actually really good so far. Rough. This is not a fun and upbeat movie. …holy shit, that's a real D. C. Talk song they just used.

SCOTUS, which ordered Alabama to create a second Black opportunity district just 3 years ago, has lifted that order a week before the primary. The Purcell principle says courts shouldn't permit chaos too close to an election—it's now an open question whether there will even be a primary on schedule.

Didn't have the idea in time this year - and I'm not going anyway - but some day I'm gonna go to FWA dressed as the Deer God from Black Mountain Side, and I'm gonna marry the first person who plays along. THE CON CRUD THEY THINK YOU'VE GOT IT THEY THINK YOU'RE GOING MA-A-AD

Learning nushell has been going great. My first learning project was a script to download a podcast feed; that turned out to be really simple. Done in like 30 lines and an hour. Turns out nu is pretty awesome.

The XAI/Anthropic deal is big in many ways, one of which is that it feels like an admission of defeat from Elon. Can't create a model good enough to compete with Claude so suddenly you've become a service provider for the company you accused of Destroying Western Civilization last month

Spent a couple days off-and-on writing a podcast downloader in rust. Working with quick_xml was torture; never finished it. Tried a comparison in C#, which I also don't know: incredibly quick and painless. Done in an hour and a half, including learning how to do everything. Fuck rust, kinda.

I've been learning Rust lately, and it's not going great. I have a lot of gripes, but the one that's getting me right this second is how batteries-not-included it is compared to python. So many "how do I do XYZ" questions require external libraries, in cases that python stdlib just covers.

Two things can be true at once. It can be true that conservatives are entirely dishonest actors -- lying authoritarian shit-heels in fact -- on free speech. And it can also be true that the liberal ultra-prog left are terrible on this issue too.

the entire sequence is so predictable if you make even a minimal effort to understand the forces and incentives at play, but of course the American press prides itself on refusing to do that

The Dunwich Horror (2008): someone made this. Every scene of this thing feels like the camera should pan out and show the real characters in the real movie watching this garbage.

Not only is this completely horrible from both a liberal and an environmentalist perspective, but this is also the complete abandonment of conservative politics from like 1950 to 2008. I know we all know this, but it's important to remember.

I can tell this movie is aimed at teens because this character is walking around a hotel parking lot with a loudspeaker and I think the viewer isn't supposed to want to kill her with a brick.

Predator: Badlands Actually pretty good! It's a bog-standard coming-of-age story, but for that, I really liked it. The alien world is vibrant, we get some creative monsters and hazards, and they deliver a touching story with sparse dialog and emotive critters.

How did this one random sub-agency of DHS become America’s secret police force, with a larger budget than many entire states? We’re so stuck on this absurd theoretical debate over “do we need immigration enforcement” that we missed Trump building himself a vast paramilitary army

The Tormented: nothing happened. We had a second scene that would count as a plot point; I looked, and it's an hour into this 1:14 movie. 1:14 and they didn't even have that much material! I didn't know there was a "mafia cult" involved until I looked the movie up on imdb.

I kind of honestly think it's a problem that stupid people take a lot of their worldview from art and media (rather than, like, the education system or news or references) and we haven't updated a bunch of our common canon or tropes.

I just saw a family going for a walk in my apartment complex where the mom and dad were wearing plate carriers. I have to say, I'm not a fan. It's obviously legal, but you've still told me two things: 1: you're more likely to be armed, and 2: you're real bad at assessing risk.
