Wed's trip to SW Shrops turned up a big surprise - tiny larvae of the Land Caddis, Enoicyla pusilla. Britain's only terrestrial caddisfly, it is confined entirely to the Wyre Forest area. This discovery is a long way west of that & v. unexpected. So small (<2mm) we nearly missed them. Amazing.

Limnephilus pati was first described by Irish entomologist Dr James O'Connor in 1980. Present in Ireland, it was believed to be extinct from our nearest neighbour. However, this is now the third site the species has been recorded from in Britain since 2020. #Trichoptera #Caddisfly #LimnephilusPati

A very cool find! a larva of 𝐼𝑡ℎ𝑦𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑐ℎ𝑖𝑎 sp. (#trichoptera Hydroptilidae) from the River Mimram. People have always assumed that these were 𝐼. 𝑙𝑎𝑚𝑒𝑙𝑙𝑎𝑟𝑖𝑠 but it's indistinguishable from the other British species (𝐼. 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑣𝑎𝑡𝑎). This specimen will be barcoded #GeneFlow24 #NHM #taxonomy #chalkstream
