Further strengthening the security of our neighbors means further strengthening the EU‘s security. And Montenegro is a key partner in managing the EU‘s external borders, with nearly 180 Frontex officers working side by side with national border guards.

1/ The Western Balkans are our neighbours. And in 2025, Montenegro made more progress on its path to EU accession than ever before. This demonstrates that with political will and a clear drive for reform, Montenegro can achieve its strategic goals.

At yesterday’s public lecture I had the opportunity to make clear that our only option is to go forward, and to assert our place in this new world order. We have the leverage to do so - if we act together, as European Union.

Today, I met Minister of State of the United Arab Emirates, Lana Nusseibeh. Europe and the Gulf face common challenges and have a strategic interest to work closely together on security and migration.

Jewish culture is woven into the fabric of European history. We must protect and nurture this today and well into the future. Remembrance ensures that we never forget historical truth. We remember, together.

As we continue to tighten the net on the criminal networks that traffic illegal drugs, they find ever more inventive ways to bring cocaine and other narcotics into our Union. So we must further intensify and diversify our efforts. The findings of this report will help.

Today, I visited the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) in Cyprus. The Centre allows for the timely detection and rescue of persons in distress. Thank you, Lieutenant Commander George Economou for the insights.

Today I am in Cyprus to discuss returns and the security of the Schengen area with ministers. Return rates across the EU went up in 2025 but we need to do much more and advance swiftly on the return regulation. This contributes to the security of the Schengen area.

Today, the EU delivered. Within 7 months, we reached an agreement on how to deal with inadmissible asylum applications. By updating the safe third country concept, we add new tools to the EU’s toolbox. This will enable us to step up migration diplomacy with partners.

I concluded my day in Geneva by meeting with Volker Türk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. We discussed EU migration and asylum policy and how we can work together even closer. I value his insights on ensuring that human rights are at the heart of migration management.

Today, I met with UN High Commissioner Filippo Grandi. In our discussions, we reaffirmed our shared commitment to refugee protection. It is crucial to acknowledge the global responsibility to ensure asylum mechanisms are in place around the world for those in need of protection.

Great to meet you again, this time in Geneva @iomchief.iom.int ! We will continue to pursue a whole-of-route approach when it comes to migration management, and work closely with the IOM.

Today, I am in Geneva to hold a speech at the Global refugee forum and meet key leaders based here. The European Union will remain a reliable and constructive partner to the UN. And we are stepping up our engagement, by enhancing our support to host countries and the UN system.

Migration is key to Europe’s competitiveness. Today I hosted an Implementation Dialogue on Talent Attraction and Retention, focusing on challenges, best practices, and simpler processes to bring in and keep third-country talent that EU companies urgently need.

Today, we welcomed 80+ delegations to Brussels and launched the Global Alliance Joint Declaration. Partners from five continents are uniting to strengthen prevention and responses to migrant smuggling - and to expand safe, legal alternatives to irregular migration.

Migrant smuggling is a dangerous, transnational crime that puts lives at risk across the globe. It demands a firm, coordinated, and uncompromising response. The EU is taking decisive action together with international partners.

Today, the EU has shown that we can deliver. The Council reached a general approach on the safe third country concept and the first EU safe country of origin list. These are all measures that will help process claims more effectively and reduce pressure on asylum systems.

Nach 365 Tagen als EU-Kommissar, 84 Dienstreisen und unzähligen Gesprächen in allen 27 Mitgliedstaaten blickte ich gestern auf mein erstes Jahr zurück. Wir haben bereits wichtige Weichen für die Zukunft Europas gestellt.

Yesterday afternoon, I met philosophical and non-confessional leaders to discuss polarisation in societies. These leaders act as interlocutors and ambassadors throughout Europe as regards the EU’s values.

Concluding my visit to Malta and a small milestone in the first year of my mandate. I attended the Med5 Ministerial Meeting, bringing together Home Affairs Ministers from Italy, Spain, Malta, Cyprus and Greece.

I had a productive first day in Malta yesterday. I met with Prime Minister Robert Abela, and we discussed Malta’s perspective on migration and security.
