Couldn’t stand to watch #SOTU last night, but reading the analyses and watching clips this morning. The Gaslighter in Chief is telling Americans not to believe their lying eyes.

On Tuesday, the Port Commission will consider an order to strengthen civil rights protections and restrict use of port property for immigration enforcement purposes. We must do everything we can to stop this administration from reenacting the abuses of our past.

The SCOTUS tariff decision undoes bad policy that has hurt families and small businesses. AND, it is an assertion of both judicial and legislative branch powers (SCOTUS‘ final say on constitutionality and Congress’ power to set tax policy). Win-Win!

Today, I took the gavel (literally) as Commission President to lead the Port of Seattle. As we look at 2026, our focus must be on resilience, equity, and preparation. Before I share priorities for the year, I want to thank Commissioner Hasegawa for her visionary leadership over the past year.

Venezuela needs investment in civic infrastructure: education, media, community centers, job training—everything that ensures broad-based well-being. Instead, the administration is focused on rebuilding extractive oil infrastructure, ignoring the everyday needs of Venezuelans.

From 2001 to 2003, I lived in Colombia as part of a team documenting the results of US foreign policy in the Andes, and for the last eight years I’ve served as a commissioner at the Port of Seattle. My perspective on the capture of Maduro is based on those experiences. A few thoughts:

Today, I took my oath of office for a new term as Port of Seattle Commissioner alongside Commissioner Hasegawa and Commissioner Mohamed. I am honored by the trust instilled in me by King County voters and look forward to serving our region for the next 4 years.

This gives the City and the Port a chance to return to the framework established after the original industrial lands legislation. That MOU included County, Tribes, ST, and creates a mechanism for creating living wage jobs AND affordable housing.

Climate Week NYC started off hot with a federal judge blocking a Trump order that stopped a major offshore wind project and Kimmel getting back on air. Good vibes only as we work on advancing the Blue Economy.

While Don Quixote Trump is tilting at windmills, China is building ever larger versions that will quietly power thousands of homes without coal or gas. This remarkable self own by the US means higher utility bills, fewer jobs, and slipping further behind in innovation. Embarrassing.

The world is moving on. As US port throughput drops, Asian and European port traffic is increasing as trade flows divert around the US to avoid our tariffs and uncertainty.

Warehouse vacancy rates in the US are at an 11 year high. Whatever slack was in the supply chain to accommodate tariffs is gone at this point. Inventories are drawn down and product hitting store shelves now will carry at least a 10% tariff burden. ⬆️ prices, ⬇️ sales 🟰 economic downturn.

As the next self-imposed tariff deadline approaches, it’s a good time to point out that the consequences don’t kick in for consumers (and the economy) for many months. Anticipatory purchases and inventory drawdowns blunt early price pressure. Any fix will require months to undo the damage.
