I love the early use of the recreation room in Star Trek. You really felt like this was a big, diverse crew that were good at their jobs but were also just regular people in need of regular downtime.

I had a fun time at GalaxyCon in Richmond this past weekend. One of the highlights was seeing William Shatner (for the seventh time!) and hearing him speak. I’m just amazed at his energy and coherence at age 95, and the humor and poignancy with which he considers his own situation… 1/

Paul Ehrlich, author of The Population Bomb, which (very incorrectly) projected mass starvation as a result of overpopulation, died yesterday. His book came out in 1968; the Trek episode “The Mark of Gideon” came out the next year. Hard to imagine there wasn’t a connection…

RELIGION IN STAR TREK. Gene Roddenberry was (eventually) well-known as a secular humanist, and as early as The Cage he presented a traditional version of Hell as a "fable you once heard in childhood." But he was savvy enough not to alienate his audience, and of course Trek had other writers... 1/

Leonard Nimoy died on this day eleven years ago. I don’t know how long Star Trek will be remembered, but if any single part of it endures it will be his iconic character.

Robert McCall was an illustrator for Life Magazine and other publications, but is best known for being NASA’s primary artist for many years. He had a lifelong love of aviation and spaceflight, and the pre-production illustrations he made for Star Trek: The Motion Picture are marvelous.

#NoBodyTrek Energy. When Ambassador Kollos, an incorporeal being, assumed Spock’s physical form, he got to taste for a moment what it was like to be a creature of sensation. Nimoy was great in moments like this.

In The Trouble With Tribbles, Spock says it will take Cyrano Jones 17.9 years to clean up all the tribbles on the space station, which means he would've been finishing up just about in time to appear in the bar scene in Star Trek III... missed opportunity!
