I saw Jaws on the big screen yesterday (it’s in theaters for the 50th anniversary—same age as me!) What a great film… the Trek connection (if there is one), is the music. John Williams’ rising half step theme in the bass is quite similar to Sol Kaplan’s for The Doomsday Machine.

I know Sybok was based on televangelists, but with his groupie followers he reminds me of those 70’s radical groups like the Weather Underground, Symbionese Liberation Army, and Manson Family. McCoy speaks of “brainwashing”, and “the Galactic Army of Light” definitely sounds like a cult.

This is a cute little comic book I’ve had for years, but I especially like that it has a Star Trek reference

The orbital for "Shore Leave", as originally composited by the F/X house. Caught in the screening of the dailies, the image was flopped in the final print to avoid Florida, Cuba, and the Gulf Of Mexico appearing too conspicuously.

I know Koenig hated it, and it wasn’t a good wig, but I still prefer it to the comb-over! I know they were going for a Davy Jones vibe, and he does look younger in the wig, imho. I think a better crafted piece could’ve worked for him.

I love how director Nick Meyer took on Wrath of Khan without knowing anything about Star Trek, and being notoriously disdainful of pop culture but ended up appreciating it so much he even wore a uniform now and then while filming.

Over two decades separate these shots of the Klingon D7 Battlecruiser and it’s amazing how few changes were made to it. The aesthetic of Star Trek changed a lot from the tv series to the movies, but some designs are just too darn good to mess with—I adore this ship!

I love this shot from Star Trek III, in part because the stakes are high but mostly because it reminds me of the dramatic and colorful lighting that made the Original Series so distinctive.

When Harlan Ellison wrote the script for The City on the Edge of Forever, he specified that the Guardian should have “runes” around it. This was misread as “ruins” and I’m glad it was because the set design turned out to be so memorable: both forlorn and haunting.

I would say something cheesy here like “dreams do come true” but actually I was more of a Mr. Spock fan as a kid (adolescent angst and all that). As an adult I’ve tended to like Captain Kirk.

Time moves in one direction only--forward--and we are all dragged along with it. This show was old even when I discovered it as a kid in the mid-80's, and now I am a middle-aged old fart, and so many of those who were involved with it have passed on. Yet it will always be special.
