Again we must endure the farce in which the Prime Minister hands the King a list of things he wants to do for the year. Which is then read out after a ludicrous parade of pomp and pageantry which includes the Monarch holding members of the Government hostage for the duration.

Tourists will love the ancient bling. Foreigners will love the pageantry. Royal watchers will lap it up. But for indy-supporting Scots, this rigmarole is just a powerful assertion of hierarchy, elite control and the unshakeable stranglehold of the past over 'modern' Britain. #KingsSpeech

We are meant to be a modern democracy. How are we reduced to a Prime Minister pleading with a collection of unelected, unaccountable remnants of feudalism to expel one of their members from power? It's past time for this entire relic of our past to be put behind us.

I get that The Times wouldn't go near this with a million foot pole, but surely the "indelible stain" is on his mother's reign? His relationship with Epstein and alleged conduct happened when she was on the throne, and she funded most of his defence against and settlement with Virginia Guiffre.

The Monarchy isn't the only relic of British unaccountable power for life in our politics holding real power free of democratic oversight. Both the Monarchy and the a Lords need to go. Reform is not good enough.

Royal patronage is often presented as public service.
In reality, it’s symbolism without substance. The monarchy’s charitable role is largely limited to titles, appearances and photo opportunities. Symbolic generosity doesn’t keep people fed or housed. Real commitment does.

Prince Andrew has agreed not to use his titles, including Earl of Inverness. Inverness may be symbolically free, but the monarchy still holds all the power. If Inverness can lose a prince, Scotland can lose the monarchy.

A very British absurdity, that you can apparently release a press statement saying you are "no longer using your titles", and simultanously sign it "Prince Andrew." Mr Mountbatten-Windsor would surely do.
