As Kombo Breaker begins a weekend celebrating the history of NRS games I just want to shout out Brad “Slips” Vitale, who passed away last year. He was a dear friend of the Chicago NRS scene, and left an impact as a top player, an entertainer, and behind the scenes as an employee. A real master!

I always like when I’m reading a wiki on some old ass game and the reception section has review quotes from dudes who are now 40 and still doing content I enjoy. So you’ll be reading about Battlemonsters or whatever and see “Jeff Gerstmann of Gamespot said the game controls poorly and ugly graphics”

I've been replaying the PS2 game Justice League Heroes, which is a X-Men Legends like. Nobody ever talks about it but I think it's solid. 2 characters instead of 4, but otherwise it's basically just a DC take on Marvel Ultimate Alliance and that's pretty sweet. Plus Zatanna is in it.

I have a follow up dentist appointment this morning after my gum surgery. I hope they ok eating harder foods. This soft food diet is the dirt worst. My diet is like, that of an 8 year old, so not having pizza has been absolute torture.

there's a haunting scene in Obsession involving a phone call that has been on my mind all night. That movie does something well that I love in horror or sci-fi, where it invents a scenario and then gives enough backstory and detail to invest in but is vague enough that's fun to speculate on later.

I’ll be thinking about Obsession for a while. Really creepy, weird, and inventive.

I like how tonally offbeat the original Star Fox is. The low polygon models mixed with the cartoon 2D art. The characters are all animals but the story is played completely straight. The speech is the garbled animal sounds but the music goes hard. 64 is a better game but 1 is so weird and cool.

The “XBOX” thing makes me think of Namco settling on “Soulcalibur” in the early 2000’s and asking everyone to stop spelling it Soul Calibur. Although weirdly the actual sword in game is spelled as two words. 🤷‍♀️

In MMX Zero shows up looking all badass with his heroic theme music and just says “hey little guy, one day you may be as cool as me. In the meantime, I’ll go scout ahead. You do EVERYTHING else and fight 8 super villains by yourself. Peace!” What a jerk 🤷‍♀️

This is very difficult to do, but in Castlevania 3 if you manage to throw the dagger at the exact moment lightning flashes in the sky, a lightning bolt will strike the ground, which can actually hit the Cyclops if timed right.

Pretty excited for Directive 8020, the next Dark Pictures Anthology game. I've enjoyed every Supermassive title and this one's premise is especially cool. It's a simple formula that's always entertaining. Will be my weekend's entertainment.

My random random retro mag from @gamehistoryorg.bsky.social for May is a 1999 issue of PC Gamer where they predict the top games of 2000. How’d they do? Well….they got some right, but others shipped years later or not all. Can’t win em all. 🤷‍♀️

I really liked Mixtape! The saccharine coming of age 90’s nostalgia worked on me. Although it’s funny because I’m the right age for this nostalgia to hit hard but high school wasn’t actually like that AT ALL for me. 🤷‍♀️ Way less cool skateboarding and more memorizing Fatalities and neurodivergence.
