Innes Hope Pearse, co-founder of Peckham Experiment which researched what creates well-being and good health. Members of the local community were invited to join and had access to leisure & exercise facilities. They underwent medical checks and patients were actively involved in any treatment.

Fanny Wilkinson didn’t get to design many gardens around Bloomsbury. Red Lion Square in Holborn is one of the few nearby. Very good to see the recently installed plaque there.

High Road, Leyton in late 19th cent. Rosa Lewis née Ovenden (1867-1952), lived here when young. Entering domestic service aged 12, she became a highly esteemed society cook. A successful businesswoman, she bought The Cavendish, Jermyn Street, London in 1902, & ran the hotel until mid 1940s. #WHM2025

The book 'Unravelling the Yarn, Zoë Hart Dyke née Bond and the Leyton Silk Road' by Claire Weiss, was published by Leyton & Leytonstone Historical Society. It is available in our Searchroom.

Zoë, Lady Hart Dyke died 50 years ago today. A pioneer of silk farming in Britain, she was born at 9 Manor Rd, Leyton 1896. 'Family Sketchbook a hundred years ago' (1964) gives a selection of Ellen Buxton's sketches depicting family life in Leytonstone, 1864-66. Ellen (b.1848) grew up in a large evangelical family. Her vivid sketches include a lovely image of Christmas candles for tea in the nursery 1865. #bookofthemonth

Mary Fletcher died #OTD 1815. Born 1739 in Leytonstone, she lived at Forest House. Rebelling against her wealthy family, she became a Methodist preacher. Municipal treasure of the day: a badge featuring the coat of arms of the former Essex municipal Borough of Leyton. The gold and sable “lion rampant” holding the cross-staff in the crest survived into the coat of arms of successor authority LB Waltham Forest (although the lion became “passant”).
