This is essential!! When we share values and a vision of the future with others, conflict and tension and difference can be generative. They strengthen us. But ask any mediator: without a sense of shared goals or values, those same conflicts and tensions can decimate a relationship (or movement).

My uncle is leading some sort of “wtf is going on” inquiry at UT Austin and would confirm this thread, with the added complications that 1) profs who fail students get bad reviews 2) profs who fail students get yelled at for eliminating tuition money 3) profs who 1) and 2) get fired

This is something that utterly baffles me from outside of academia. You all at least hold the keys to changing this one thing, so change the wasteful performance of selection that doesn't actually get used so the stuff that does get used is made with more care.
