2 @briankeene.bsky.social autographed books, nearly 20 years apart. The first I was working at a Waldenbooks in Morgantown, WV. The second I had to order because I live in Knoxville, TN. The places our lives take us aren’t nearly as fun, but sometimes as scary, as the places Brian’s books do.

As a glasses wearer of >40 years, this will be fantastic if it expands access. But will these kiosks be available in rural areas where doctors aren’t? I applaud anything that can make access easier, but I fear it will only be in places that already have 3 optometrists in the mall.

After finishing a real banger of a book, it’s always hard to start something new. First, deciding what to grab off the TBR pile, then getting into the groove again. I guess just cracking one open, and getting going is the first step.

Finished The Devils by @joeabercrombie.com last night. What a wild ride that book was. I truly hope Cameron finds a way to include the absurdity that makes it one of the most enjoyable fantasy novels I’ve ever read.

This is what I think of when people talk about AI taking our jobs. It’s a tool. It can help us work faster. It can also just break everything.

I’m always amazed that some of the best depictions of Christians as they should be come from authors who aren’t particularly religious. Michael Carpenter from The Dresden Files is a fantastic example. I just read Pastor James’s chapter in @scalzi.com ‘s When the Moon Hits Your Eye and he’s another.

I turn 47 tomorrow. It’s not a milestone. It’s not even the answer to the ultimate question of life the universe and everything. Somehow though, it’s the hardest so far. I guess this is “late 40s”, now.

I would love to hear James Marsters narrate a @stephenking.bsky.social book. I assume the contracts are already signed, but Talisman 3 could be a good one.

Recently I’ve been nostalgic for Morgantown WV bands from the 90s and early 2000s. Stuff I would hear at 123 Pleasant Steet, or the Brewpub, or Gibbie’s. Karma to Burn and Treasure Cat have been big on the list from Apple Music. Going to have to find some Nak’d Jakob & Cheap Trucker Speed next.

Just watched Fountain of Youth on AppleTV+. Initial thoughts: Moderately fun, but not Guy Ritchie’s best. John Ksinski and Natalie Portman’s chemistry was variable. (As siblings, maybe that’s ok?) Stanley Tucci was highly underutilized.

As someone in tech, this is pretty terrifying. Hopefully humans can find ways to keep themselves relevant.

I remember a day when buying a physical copy of a book from Amazon would also get you the Kindle version. They would even let you scan the barcode from books you had already purchased and get the Kindle version for free. Pretty sure I got my first ebook of Horns by @joe-hill.bsky.social that way.

Whether you are religious or not, maybe especially if you are, this should happen. There are too many voices shouting at little boys and young men about what masculinity is. They should be hearing the calming tones of someone saying, “you’re good enough, & you should treat others like they are too”

As someone with hundred of books in my Audible library, this makes me really sad. I want to hear @wilwheaton.net narrating @scalzi.com or the multitude of @stephenking.bsky.social narrators. Not some generated voice of an emotionless machine.

So far, I’ve enjoyed all of these. Along with all of the books Wil narrates.

So hot and humid this afternoon that I was only able to make 2.3 miles between kid ball games. I’m feeling really out of shapes right now.

Heaven had better have a friggin huge library. I don’t have time to read all the books I want that came out THIS year, much less my backlog over the last 40+ years. And it better not be all Max Lucado.

Changed my contacts the other day. A few hours later, I thought my eyesight was going bad, because I needed reading glasses to even see my phone. Eventually realized, an old, non-multifocal pair had gotten in the new box. Fixed that, and I can see again!

The repetition of “You don’t have the math” in #OldMansWar is something I had forgotten and enjoyed rediscovering.

13.1 wet miles later, I finished my first official half marathon in 2:50:20. Not the time I was hoping for, but this course was hillier than expected and the rain didn’t help. I feel great about doing it. #Knoxville_Marathon

One of the best things about wearing hearing aids (probably the best imo) is: I can discreetly listen to podcasts or books, and nobody knows. It’s like wearing AirPods all the time, without the stigma. Unfortunately, music just doesn’t sound as good. #hearingaids #hardofhearing

Trying to balance getting some steps in, and not overdoing it these last several days before the Covenant Health Knoxville Half Marathon. I probably should have researched this more. Next I need to figure out how to eat and actually sleep the night before the race. #CHKM2025

Listened to the 1st Storytime with @wilwheaton.net yesterday. His delivery is great as always. I found the story to be a much more optimistic take on time travel than Heinlein’s All You Zombies, but resonated similarly.

I’m running my first half marathon next weekend. I’ve run the distance once in training, I need to the the adrenaline down at the start, and keep my pace where I want it. Going to listen to @scalzi.com’a Old Man’s War to keep the time moving forward. An old favorite that always hold my attention.

@scalzi.com thanks for coming to Knoxville. I truly enjoyed both readings. I think you’d make a fine narrator, but it would take time away from writing. It’s nice knowing you’re as fun in person as you are through your books and socials.

Ordered a signed copy of a book, and it gave me the opportunity to create an inscription. Hopefully I coined this phrase: “Nightmares aren’t horses, unless that’s what you’re afraid of.”

I’m starting to think following authors on here is a bad idea. My to-read list keeps getting longer and the order is getting more and more uncertain. Read an old favorite, or something new from my favorite author, or try something recommended by one these favorites? More time needed.

I use AI almost every day for work. This is an appropriate analogy. My company seems to see it as the way forward, but really, it’s a tool that can too easily be used as crutch. A crutch that makes stuff up when it doesn’t know the real answer.

There are so many books I want to read and re-read. How do people make time for that with kids, spouses, jobs, attempting to stay active, etc? Sometimes I wish I could upload the vague memories of books I’ve never read, so can really know if I want to read them.
