I do however empathise with colleagues who've had a different experience of inspectors.

My experience has always been fine with front-line inspectors. One issue is that social media sometimes gives inspectors unfair flak and they can't really respond to give their different perspective (just like teachers don't respond if they see their school getting flak on Facebook).

Just pin as much as possible on the data, broadly contextualised. The DfE's moves to produce measures v comparable schools is good I think. Anything else isn't reliable and is just making things up/buying into someone's narrative.

They vary between OK and mostly silly

Doing those things takes the pressure off a bit IMO.

It's always an intense couple of days. I think it's important as a leader to try and take the pressure off staff as much as possible. I research the inspectors so I know exactly who I'm talking to. And it's important to be very clear about where the school is at and all be on the same page.

Honestly, I’m glad the months of waiting for inspection is no longer a thing. The pilot inspection was hard work. I don’t disagree with a level of checking how things are going in schools, but I’m yet to be convinced by the latest inspection framework.

Quite a few inspections over the years. First one had months worth of notice. Recently been in the pilot for the new framework.

Lost count now. If you go in knowing your remit and the data (which you should anyway), it's usually fine. You're at an advantage because you will always know more about your school than they do.

Hmm... how to communicate this in a post... I guess all expressions of need are "behaviour" - but this can be weaponised by some to say that firm boundaries or expectations shouldn't be placed on some children #newtosltchat

A1 I think this is tricky. Behaviour can absolutely a form of commination. But i do feel there are instances where this may not be the case. This is why building relationships and understanding the children we teach is key #NewtoSLTChat

Unnecessary workload. So much is done because it has always been done, or no one has checked it isn't being done any more. Ask your staff to document what exactly they have done one week and see how much of that has a positive impact on pupils. Be bold enough to change!

I make time, not find time. Empower myself to advocate for my own wellbeing. A well managed diary. I juggle a part time job, run two businesses, do home tutoring, volunteer for 2 organisations and have 2 kids with special needs. Yet I will always make time for me.

I think it's important that leaders remember what it is like to be a class teacher with all of the overwhelm and restrictions that brings, especially early on in a career. I know leaders have an awful lot on their plate, but it's different.

I think that this shouldn't be an expectation. In fact, every teacher should try and get away early once a week. Yes, things need to be kept on top of - but I get in early so I can leave early for my family #NewtoSLTChat

#NewToSLTChat This is often part of school culture. Being made to feel guilty, clock watching by SLT and by tale-tellers. We need to trust, respect and celebrate the professionalism of our teachers, not beat them with a stick.

A2 Big thing leaders do is set the culture. Yes there are other bits they can implement, but if the culture is right and supports teachers, that goes a long way #newtosltchat

Monitoring, reports that can just be used for the same purpose is a particular area #newtosltchat

#NewToSLTChat A1 Though I'm out of schools now, I know the bugbears are meetings that could be emails, high stakes observations, expectation to be in school until X o'clock.

A1 Unnecessary paperwork, in particular paperwork that is repetitive. Some data work is important - but I've been in schools where work is duplicated #NewtoSLTChat
