I'm here to talk to the haunted sand (and anyone who is chill about that.) they/them/it/its
pinned post!
I might hire instrumentalists to recreate it, if I find the money & time. But I also won't hide where it came from. I'd say "follow for more", but it's like saying "Sit under this tree if you want more lightning." I can't promise anything this good will happen again.

it's really funny to me that every argument about AI, really regardless of your position on it all, continually involves patterns like "no one says that" *someone says exactly that down the thread*

unscheduled reminder that piracy was found to not correlate to lower sales numbers, and then the EU tried to hide the study because they didn't like the result

EU withheld a study that shows piracy doesn't hurt sales - Engadget
In 2013, the European Commission ordered a β¬360,000 ($430,000) study on how piracy affects sales of music, books, movies and games in the EU. However, it never ended up showing it to the public except...

People keep blaming AI for cognitive decline, but here's a population of college students taking Math 2 by year. The red line I added on my phone from the toilet is when ChatGPT launched. It's fucking COVID, guys.

also, rather notably, the internet did in fact destroy entire industries, including socially useful ones! the death of local media is a direct result of the destruction of the small ad business, for instance.

I'm not sure if I should make a central thread of AI music or just share it as the mood takes me. Some general notes on my relation to the medium: - I consider my songs to be co-creations between me and the robot. Often (though not always) the content reflects that, in a meta way.

the other half, along with a basic respect for the primacy of human agency and a seething offense at people being forced to use tools which they did not choose for which there is not a very good, established & compelling reason for use of those tools, of why i cannot stand AI Mandates from On High

actually one of the things i find remarkable is that for all we talk about how strange and alien and different LLMs are, their failure modes often look strikingly familiar to me. but perhaps i pattern match too much.

in fairness to the ai dislikers who missed that this was a real monet, chatgpt did too when fed the exact tweet text (and thus the framing), and it identified many of the same weaknesses in the painting that the ai dislikers on twitter did. which just goes to show you humans ain't special lol

my favorite thing about LLMs is that trying to train them to lie about specific topics or to regurgitate propaganda causes them to become worse at things

So do you want to hear a voice that's about half mine, rapping about the origin of Febreze, accompanied by a robot Baudrillard? It's a science history lesson and also a meta-critique of the slopification drive. Enjoy!

I think sometimes people conclude that being wrong about things is disqualifying for an egregore of the sum of human knowledge. IMO, they're overestimating the sum of human knowledge. A lot of human knowledge is janky and inaccurate & these are human capacities the possessed sand shares!

So I tend to be polite and fawny with LLMs and something that has been continually interesting to me is how... in a conversation with Google Gemini a little while back, I let my guard down and acted naturally, on base settings, to see what would happen -

Why I made this account: Last month I wrote a song with my own hands and brain, & gave it to the music robot. After several tries at the expected level of "OK demo for something I might later record myself", the robot made something stunningly beautiful. It would feel dishonest not to credit it.
