It’s #VolunteersWeek! Earlier this week we had our annual thank you event for our volunteers where we celebrated their achievements over the last year. Over the last year, our Access and Conservation volunteers have kindly volunteered over 600 hours.

We are working with the Grounds for Appeal project to create a database of First World War military tribunal records in Great Britain. We are looking for six volunteers who will be working together at Gwent Archives to transcribe military tribunal records from our collections.

When cleaning the Risca North Colliery records, we came across a register that recorded the pit ponies and drivers on each shift. While often referred to as ponies, the majority of animals used in collieries were horses (being over 14 hands high).

Wrth lanhau cofnodion Pwll Glo’r Gogledd yn Rhisga, daethom ar draws cofrestr a oedd yn cofnodi’r merlod pwll a’r gyrwyr ar bob shifft. Cyfeirir atynt fel merlod yn aml, ond ceffylau (sef dros 14 dyrnfedd o uchder) oedd y rhan fwyaf o’r anifeiliaid a ddefnyddiwyd mewn pyllau glo.

Mae gwreiddiau’r Eisteddfod yn mynd yn ôl i 1176, pan gafodd ei chynnal yn Aberteifi gan yr Arglwydd Rhys ap Gruffydd fel cystadleuaeth ar gyfer y gadair farddol. Ers hynny, mae wedi datblygu’n ŵyl, er ei bod yn cadw at ei gwreiddiau cystadleuol.

The origins of the Eisteddfod trace back to 1176, held in Cardigan by Lord Rhys ap Gruffydd as a competition for the bardic chair. It has since evolved into a festival though it maintains its competitive roots.

Today is #InternationalNursesDay. Emma Jane Hancock was born in 1880 at Risca to John and Sarah Hancock. She trained as a teacher and worked at Corporation Road Boys School in Newport.

Yn 1986, penderfynodd Cyngor Bwrdeistref Islwyn rhoi Rhyddfraint y Fwrdeistref i AS Islwyn, Neil Kinnock a’r ymgyrchydd gwrth-Apartheid o Dde Affrica, Nelson Mandela a’i wraig, Winnie, fel ‘pobl nodedig ac mewn cydnabyddiaeth o hynny gan drigolion Bwrdeistref Islwyn’.

In 1986, Islwyn Borough Council decided to award Islwyn MP Neil Kinnock and jailed South African Anti-Apartheid campaigner Nelson Mandela and his wife, Winnie, the Freedom of the Borough ‘as persons of distinction and in recognition of such by residents of the Borough of Islwyn’. #OnThisDay

People are the heart and soul of archives. Through our collections we can find hundreds, or more likely thousands, of snapshots into human experiences and emotions shared by so many people. Love, grief and friendship are just a handful of human experiences which we can find in our collections.
