Illinois has a new #hail record. 🧊 This week, IBHS joined scientists at NIU to confirm the largest hailstone ever recorded in the state, using our advanced 3D scanning technology. From the March 10 storm, the stone measured 168.05 mm at its max and 93.03 mm at its minimum, weighing 557.2 grams.

In January, an EF2 tornado was photographed 1 mile from my apartment complex while I slept peacefully through a barely audible siren. That felt like a sign to get a NOAA weather radio. The only issue now is George, who seems determined to test its durability by chewing the antenna into oblivion.

It was nice to get a small vacation in (even if very brief) after working so hard to complete my Master’s this spring and then immediately jumping into a 2 month field campaign. All very rewarding and amazing experiences, but a couple days on the beach was certainly needed. 😊

I rode along with the meteorologists chasing the world's most extreme hail storms across the Great Plains in a massive effort improve our forecasts of these damaging events. Thanks to all involved in @nsficechip.bsky.social for having us. Had a hail of a good time. 🧪🌩️🌪️

Hail yeah! The ICECHIP field campaign (@nsficechip.bsky.social‬) has wrapped up, and the collected hailstones are being housed in the NSF NCAR Cold Lab for further study! 🌨️🔬 The project involved chasing storms from Montana to Texas to better understand the conditions that produce hail/hailstorms.

After 42 days and 15,000 + miles driven, #ICECHIP completed 24 IOPs across 11 states, including within 75 miles from both the Mexico and Canada borders. This totaled more than 10,000 hailstones collected by our teams while data was gathered on different types of hailstorms!

Got a tornado on MiniCOW’s ferry back to Bismarck, ND after ICECHIP IOP23. The highlight of the day for me, personally.

Teams had the most successful IOP yet today in Colorado, featuring > 70-80 mm hailstones (large apple sized) and an unexpected tornado near Akron! Well done everyone!
