When I started at UCBerkeley School of Education, I was the only assistant professor. Now, there are are four of us--each with different expertise but all with the same commitment to educate like democracy depends on it. It's our faculty retreat and we got some cool jackets!

Joined the faculty writing retreat at the UC Botanical Gardens, and so inspired to see colleagues typing away and conceptualizing their masterpieces. Thanks Lorena Oropeza, Ilona Yim, and Karie Frasch for organizing this! Wonderful to meet Catherine Ceniza Choy, a trailblazing Filipino academic!

Grateful to finish teaching a course on orgs outside schools: unions, philanthropy, edtech, PTAs, RPPs, CBOs, UNESCO, etc. Students appreciated listening to lectures and hearing from professionals I interviewed!

(1/2) I was searching something on Google Scholar when it told me I had reached 1,000 citations. I know impact isn't just about citations, but it is humbling (and quite terrifying tbh) to know that others read, engage, cite, and even critique my work.

(38) Excited to share this new paper with Hsin-Ta Tsai, as we investigated if diverse roommate pairings can improve student outcomes. TLDR: Yes, domestic students paired with international peers saw higher GPAs and greater persistence, with benefits most pronounced early in college! bit.ly/JET_038

Excited to teach in this classroom and with such diverse students including a surgeon, DEI director, school district leader, race car engineer, etc. It's a new set-up we're testing with Berkeley's virtual classroom, and I'm one of three professors trying it out! Wish us luck!

Exams in the age of ChatGPT, a🧵 (1) For my class on education inequalities, my students answer 5 essay questions in person. (2) To prevent cheating, I and my TAs walk around as students type their answers. (3) Students make one-page cheatsheets, which is effective to prep!
