Bill 14: The first ever anti-long ballot legislation, courtesy of Danielle Smith's (rather embattled) UCP. If passed, Alberta voters would be prohibited from nominating more than 1 candidate each, and candidates will need to collect 100 nomination signatures (up from the current 25).

"Electoral reform would be tantamount to enacting political antitrust legislation." Exactly. Politicians shouldn't be allowed to set the rules by which politicians are elected. This is the job of an independent, non-partisan body in the form of a Citizens' Assembly.

If there were awards for systemic flaws in our political system I think Premiers & PMs being able to unilaterally decide what electoral reform will look like or in this case whether it happens at all would win top prizes in the #conflictofinterest and #democraticdeficit categories.

BRC had record high byelection turnout + record low rejected ballots. No surprise to us😀 but it's worth noting that contrary to what our critics were saying just a few weeks ago, voters have once again proved they have the intellectual capacity to handle a unusually high number of candidates👍
