Over the past few weeks, Matthew and I have been writing back and forth about modes of experience, asking the question what does it mean to experience something firsthand, secondhand, and thirdhand? The process itself has been a fruitful experiment.

Went around with a lobsterman today and enjoyed how he talks about his craft. He sees it less like hunting or fishing and more like husbandry. I asked if the lobsters just treat the bait and traps as habitat at this point and he said he calls the traps “barn stalls” and the water “the farm.”

My scholarship in #phenomenology so far has created a pretty strong relationship between Maurice Merleau-Ponty and I. That’s my guy. But reading Abram’s Spell of the Sensuous and now Deloria Jr & Wildcat’s Power and Place, the connection between phenomenology and indigenous metaphysics is so strong…

Here’s a short write up of one of the ways that I use phenomenology (and ecophenomenology specifically) as a way of thinking about how we educate. Consider it a preview of some of the larger scale and more academic research that I’m currently embarking on.

I like this take, and I think it reinforces the idea that AI can be a powerful tool *for the competent*. Less a learning tool, more a productivity and organization tool (as many of the teachers in the article are using it for). I still think fear of AI is going to really harm our students, though.

The whole thing is a toothpaste out of the tube situation. It does give us an opportunity to rethink just what our educational systems are for. If the purpose of our education system is social reproduction, then great - let students use AI. As Daniel points it, genAI is great at that.

I've been thinking through a heuristic for looking at a student's perception of distance to a subject in the classroom and how teachers can manipulate that psychological distance to their advantage. I wrote a bit about how I'm thinking about it here. Thanks for reading!

This is a frustrating disconnect that needs some solving...

Field trips aren't just "nice to have" - they're transformative learning experiences that bridge psychological distance and bring students closer to phenomena. It is especially concerning to see federal budget cuts threatening these irreplaceable place-based learning opportunities.

A direct hit on the science pipeline in Philadelphia from cancelled IMLS grants. Perspective changing firsthand science experiences for 4 schools only cost $108,000 federal dollars out of the ~$270m IMLS dollars granted - gone.

When I talk to teachers about psychological distance I get some blank stares but my hunch (and my research) is that most teachers are already using psychological distance as a teaching tool without even realizing it. I wrote a bit about it here.

This is an excellent take on what we might expect and how to handle it. As science educators and communicators, some of this is on us to find ways to productively change the narrative in a way that builds trust in science without shaming people who frankly just don't understand and need some help.
