In year 7 #mathstoday I started doing a new type of retrieval - 4 questions at the end of the lesson (after a school-wide change to “do now”s). Worked really nicely, and a factorising question highlighted to them perfectly why it’s so important. Hopefully we’ll see impact in the next assessment! 🤞🏻

In core #mathstoday we did histogram revision, and my brain had obviously not warmed up as they spent a lot of the lesson correcting my mistakes off the visualiser. But that’s a good revision activity right - spotting the mistake? 😂

Back in school today, and it really felt like we’d never been away. Too soon for a count down to Easter? 🙈

For year 13 Core #mathstoday we were looking at AER and APR. Took them right back to some GCSE algebraic manipulation skills, but doesn’t seem to feature heavily in exams historically so won’t be spending more time on it now.

#mathstoday included arguments about how to teach year 7 factorising. Prime factor trees or grid method? Either way, blown away by the level of maths our 7s are doing with Mosaic! Just need to look at our retrieval practice to make sure their new skills don’t wither.

#mathstoday (yesterday) was a full day of Year 12 as we did Maths Fest live stream. It was brilliant, Numberphile Live Show is how I’ve described it to others. We got them to bring in snacks and mugs, and had an hour of puzzles before it started. Fully fully recommend for next year!

In #mathstoday we had a department meeting where we discussed our new KS3 scheme of work, Mosaic, and how each of us is adapting resources to make it work for our sets. Nice to have an opportunity to talk maths and pedagogy ☺️

I don’t know how I would have coped as an NQT teaching Core Maths without the support and CPD from AMSP. A Level would have been a much more terrifying prospect without the TAM course. Cannot understand the rationale in the current climate, and gutted for future teachers. Furious doesn’t cover it.

Also in #mathstoday I had my TAM observation. Brilliant reflection session afterward, and comforting having someone come in and see the chaos that can be my large class. But i am really looking forward to playing with GeoGebra over the next few weeks ☺️ Any tips or ideas very welcome!

In #mathstoday we started integration: highlighted the need for +c by getting them to diff to the same gradient function from different functions. The groan was loud when they realised; but their paired conversations about why it was needed were then quite lively!

In the middle of a year 12 unit test today (checking differentiation skills before we move to integrating); I found out that I’ve passed my NPQLT! 🥳 #mathstoday

#MathsToday with year 10 was looking into using a calculator properly, and we completed one of all time favourite tasks from Don Stewart’s median blog

#MathsToday was the first time my year 9s worked in silence for 25 full minutes. I didn’t even ask them to!! They are normally quite chatty and excitable, but today they were just entranced by moving averages. I was scared to move for fear of distracted them! 😂

In #mathstoday I was overwhelmed with my year 12s, and I’m looking for some advice. I have 28 of them, with grades ranging from 5 to 9 at GCSE. There’s as many HA as there are LA, and I’m struggling to get the support and challenge right. Any advice would be so appreciated!

#Mathstoday was investigating Beyoncé with the StatsMedic resource. Even had a little sing song with my Year 9s. Sampling is a practical thing, so should be taught in a practical real way. It showed them in real time the pros and cons of each method really effectively.

In #mathstoday we investigated the death toll of the Titanic on a brilliant Desmos activity. They did some fact-checking, calculated proportions and analysed the data. Led to an interesting chat on whether we would still take the “women and children first” approach today.

In #mathstoday I used a tonne of diagnostic questions, brilliant revision tool for quick fire questions with Year 11. Highlight has been a Casio training session on using my Christmas present of a fx-GC50. Made myself a little picture while waiting!

Year 7 started looking at algebra in #mathstoday. I was amazed at how intuitively they worked. Highlight was discussing how dealing with any unknown or variable could be considered algebra - like planning on when to set your alarm in the morning based on the length of your shower routine 😂

In #MathsToday my Year 11s took on their first Staple Challenge. They definitely found it challenging, but have requested to do it again before their mocks start next week. However tomorrow we’re doing a @mathsbox.bsky.social “find the mistake” activity. Not quite ready to drown them in papers yet!

It’s been a good couple of weeks: Birthday dinner at Adam’s, 24 hours in Paris, Christmas with my family, a West End show and a very cheesey NYE. Even squeezed in some rest days! But now it’s time to get back to the maths… 😊

Today #InMaths we actually did some sampling - rather than just reading about it. Looked at all the different, with methods and pros and cons. Not only good fun, but also some good reflection points. “But all I have are bounty’s, that’s not fair” being a firm favourite 😂

Today #InMaths we explored gradient functions on Geogebra. Students are starting to use the word “conjecture”, and challenge each others reasoning. Exactly the kind of environment I’ve been hoping to nurture!

Today #InMaths I revisited a very dusty drawer in my brain to delve into factorising polynomials. I am grid method convert! My brain is TIRED after a full day of A Level on the TAM course, but we go again tomorrow!

In #MathsToday an assessment lesson quickly fell apart, and we all struggled through some cost benefit analysis questions together. Every question needs a different approach, and there’s so so many words! If anyone has any nice way of prepping for this I’d be forever grateful!! #coremaths
