I am increasingly frustrated with the state of modern television. Let's say, generously, that season one of Babylon 5 cost $20million. Adjusted for inflation, that's $45,673,573. The fact that they made 22 episodes with detailed makeup and costuming is a marvel, and I don't understand

Absolutely died at this scene. And died again when the visiting Minbari said he quite liked it.

Ok, I've been dutifully informed we don't own it all on DVD, we have the first two seasons. IRRESPECTIVE OF THAT, the DVD on the shelf is what got me asking.

Babylon 5 passed me by when it first aired because I was *checks notes* 6. I never had reason to consider it until I asked
@phrancq.bsky.social
about it (they have it all on DVD). So we're watching it now, and I'm approaching the end of season 1. It's a really interesting counterpoint to Star Trek

My grandfather used to call on our birthdays and sing happy birthday to us. He had a stroke in 2016, and he has only been able to do it once for me since then. So I've picked up the mantle. When it's my family's birthdays, I will send them a voice note of me singing and a little message.

I'm listening to Fenian as an interlude before I start on Abbey Road. But it is coming. Today. And I will do another thread, because this is fun.

So Tomorrow Never Knows is mostly a John. This will surprise no one who knows me, but I don't like John Lennon. For more than his music too. Iykyk.

I was also right that Good Day Sunshine was a Paul.

I have Beatles Blindness. As in, I have the barest of minimum knowledge of their music. As in, I asked "is this the Beatles?" when Hey Jude was playing at a wedding. My husband loves the Beatles. So I'm making a serious attempt at listening to Revolver, at their recommendation. Here we go I guess

Irrespective of the ideology behind it, there are three modes of political existence: conservative, liberal and radical. The conservative wishes to maintain the status quo, it's all working for them and things are good for them, so they want to conserve that position.

An interesting observation: the more comfortable one becomes in one's existence, the more conservative one becomes in maintaining that comfort. Even a progressive person can easily become conservative when they decide their comfort is enough. Remain uncomfortable.

Pierre Bourdieu once argued that the question of whether something is art isn't answered by the artist's intention or even the object itself. Instead, the quality of being "art" is conferred by a community — curators, dealers, auction houses, audiences, etc. 🧵

Lotta boring pretty outfits at the Met Gala this year but I like Janelle Monae's craft project from the obsolete cable stash.

This one, also unfinished, is a small illustration study of Wind in the Willows. Painting with oils was so intimidating at first, but now I love it. Oils and gouache have been a delightful addition to my repertoire

My five weeks of funemployment last year really was one of the best periods of artistic study I've had in... forever? I wish I had the option to do it more often. She's still a work in progress, but I have loved stretching myself with this one

Just FYI there’s an account on here called
@redditspaceviewes.bsky.social
(with over 200k followers) that is posting a bunch of AI slop (including a “Saturn polar hexagon” with 8 sides) and claiming it’s NASA imagery. If you see anything posted by them, it’s likely fake.

Hey so I actually don't care about the PTSD and after-effects suffered by soldiers in the IOF. I actually don't care about how they feel after putting countless bullets into countless children. I actually don't care if they have nightmares about the atrocities they committed.

A big part of what I loved about Clue was how straight it is played in so many ways, the comedic timing without having to wink wink nudge nudge the audience. It trusts that you are along for the ride, and I wish more movies these days would take that approach.

I am endlessly fascinated by space. I also hold a deep fear of being Out There In It. But seeing the Artemis II crew talking about their experiences of perspective is so moving, I genuinely envy (with deep and abiding love) anyone who reaches those outer limits

Pumped Up Kicks, I think, as an outsider looking in, cannot be understated in how important a moment in pop culture it is for the generations of post-Columbine children trying to grow up and get an education in a country and government that is too happy to dance along and not listen to the words.
