On the day of President Jimmy Carter's state funeral, Newcastle city leaders led tributes at the Civic Centre. The US flag was lowered to half-mast and a wreath was laid on the Jimmy Carter stone, commemorating his visit to Newcastle in 1977, the first by a sitting US president.
