‘Southampton Pub, D-Day Plus One’ by Lt Tom Wood, 1944. Canadian Tom Wood painted a scene of celebration in a Southampton pub one day after D-Day - 82 years ago today. There are Canadians and Americans, and the chap with the pom-pom is a Free French sailor.

On this day in 1937, SS Habana arrived in Southampton from Bilbao. On board were around 3,840 Basque children who had been evacuated from the Spanish Civil War. They were taken to a volunteer-run camp at North Stoneham before being relocated to homes across the country.

On this day in 1908, a dramatic blizzard covered Southampton in a thick blanket of snow. The town was described as a ‘fairy world’. Two ships collided in the Solent. Here’s a blog post about the 25 April 1908 snowstorm, featuring eleven photos taken on that day:

On this day in 1966, seventeen-year-old Mick Channon made his league debut for Southampton FC at the Dell. Channon scored that day and he would go on to score 228 goals for the Saints in all competitions. He is still the club’s all-time leading goalscorer.

UK mobility aid laws were written in the 1920s, when people used devices like this Argson motor trike. The rules have just been tweaked a few times since then. A century on, it’s long past time for Disabled people to have equal pedestrian, cycling and cycling-equivalent mobility rights.

At the moment, children who need powered mobility aids are restricted by law to walking speed in public places until they turn 14. But children running, cycling and riding horses are allowed to go much faster - as long as they don't endanger others.

At the moment, the law means Disabled parents and carers aren't allowed to attach prams or pushchairs to their wheelchairs or mobility scooters, and aren't allowed to have aids designed to carry children on board.
