The town I spent most of my time in in Texas (Leakey) doesn’t have a bookstore (though it does have a library), but I did buy some books I’m looking forward to at Alienated Majesty in Austin. Also, I had the new @alvinlu.bsky.social waiting for me when I got back.

Finally got around to this terrific book & it was well worth it. Something rare, reminding me of my experience with Henry Miller, how it balances force of a torrential confessional with steely sense of technique and observation. Called it out and commented in my 13 Questions interview:

Reprint in progress: Shadowings by Lafcadio Hearn, an excellent collection from 1900, featuring studies of Japanese legends and linguistics as well as more personal, Gothic and Symbolist-inspired narratives. An odd duck in Hearn's catalog but all the stronger for it. @addisonzeller.bsky.social
