Rhiannon Leaman's maiden speech was personal as well as political. As a parent, she knows first-hand what it means to wait years for a diagnosis. She spoke for every family still fighting a system that was supposed to be on their side.

Liberal Democrats have always been clear that Britain’s future lies back in the EU, and we have a credible plan to get there - starting with a UK-EU customs union.

Brexit promised to protect our creative industries, then left them out of the trade deal entirely. Tours cancelled. Exports lost. A generation of talent gone. Paul Strasburger sets the record straight.

Though smaller than last year, the Unite the Kingdom march over the weekend was still sickening. The resurgence of out-and-out racism in the UK, from demands for remigration of British Asians to Antisemitic slurs on placards at both demonstrations, demands we meet this moment.

We have to fight back. The march is symptomatic of taboos around racism, Antisemitism and Islamophobia diluting and weakening. This is extremely dangerous. We need to do three things:

1. Rebuild the cordon sanitaire in our politics. When Robert Jenrick complained of brown faces in Birmingham, or Sarah Pochin spoke of being “driven mad” by black people on TV adverts, they should have lost the whip and become parliamentary outcasts.

Similarly, when political parties see council candidates talk of “Jewish conspiracies” and other tropes - as we did in May, there should be no question that they immediately are suspended - from any party.

Political leaders of all parties need to show they will not tolerate racism. Ted Heath did the right thing with Enoch Powell fifty years ago - modern political leaders should do the same.

2. We need to rebuild unity in our communities. People organised effectively against the national front decades ago, though much of that infrastructure died back in the 1990s and noughties as the threat lessened.

Effective community politics, delivering for people while challenging racism and pushing back against the rhetoric of the far right in the places where people are is essential, and needs strengthening.

3. Finally - an immediate step is to stop the flow of foreign money into our politics, which is bolstering the extreme far right. It is unacceptable that people like Elon Musk are able to give out cash while calling for political violence.

Social media giants should not be allowed to pay politicians for extreme posts that maximise engagement. Foreign funding of unregulated digital ads must cease. And those who promote political violence should not be allow to fund campaigns.
