This week, I read Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie ("We should all be feminists"). This beautiful 2006 novel deals with the civil war in 1960s Nigeria, and more particularly the man-made famine in Biafra. Chillingly relevant as we see hunger used once again as a tool of war.

Philomena Essed, bekend van haar baanbrekende onderzoek naar alledaags racisme, kreeg gisteren de Akademiepenning, van de Koninklijke Akademie van Wetenschappen. Welverdiende erkenning voor een inspirerend onderzoeker: open en stellig, nadenkend en gepassioneerd, wijs en waardig.
