1/ Před 128 lety, tedy 13. září 1897 se narodil Erich F. Schmidt (1897-1964), tak trochu opomíjený předovýchodní archeolog. Proslavil se především svými průkopnickými leteckými průzkumy v Íránu ve službách Orientálního ústavu (OI).

Excavation of Neolithic long barrow and Early Medieval round barrow (Muszkowice forest) with exciting discovery of a Funnel Beaker Neolithic pit containing large fragments of ceramic pots, daub, burned bones and flint fakes. Possible it was a sacrificial pit at the western end of the long barrow.

In Muszkowice,soil scientists document how Holocene deforestation and land use transformed fertile Chernozems into Luvisols. The barrows demonstrate that today’s Luvisols in our region were once much more fertile soils. They remind us that soils are continuously shaped by human activity.

I joined colleagues from the University of Hradec Králové this week to sample soils from Muszkowice (PL), where two 8th-century barrows were inserted into a long Eneolithic mound. This forms part of the Polish–Czech project on long-term land use dynamics at prehistoric ritual sites.

Yesterday we were sampling at the early medieval hillfort Kozly near the Elbe River. I took micromorphological samples. What’s striking: during the communist period, waste was dumped right into the core of the site – destroying part of the hillfort and leaving lots of intrusive material.

Just finishing excavation of the Corded Ware tomb with a ring ditch. Adult women was buried on her left side, head oriented to east. The burial assemblage consists of 3 vessels, a flint sickle blade, shell beads, perforated dog/wolf teeth and a copper spiral. Successful dig. Thanks TEAM! 🤎
