OK, serious work-related question... 1. Organisations begin to think they don't need user-centred designers because "AI can do that". (Already happening.) 2. We say, "Ah, but you need designers because..." and give a ton of real, compelling reasons, from quality to ethics.

"Real insights come from unexpected behavior... We can’t replicate it with LLMs." This is key. LLM training smooths out outliers and edge cases. But outliers and edge cases are real people who need you to listen to them. If you only test with AI personas, you're blocking those people out.

It goes without saying that a fully AI generated product is trash. But even if partly generated, the AI component indelibly taints the remainder. It signals "oh, yeah, I didn't care about that part." Don't think so little of your audience that you convince yourself they can't tell the difference.

A cleaned-up and expanded version of this thesis, in case you need to convince some AI-pilled manager that you can't just take these things at face value.

Tiny UI tweaks have been the traditional approach to introducing deliberate friction, which is why they usually fail. Consider the standard "are you sure" popup that appears right when you click the button. Of course you are sure! You just clicked the button! The regret only comes ten seconds later

In fact, the only thing AI is good at is making its output appear perfectly polished and plausible. It is reducing friction on the way to an acceptable outcome by, essentially, lying to you. It's a better experience for you, but a worse one for anyone who relies on the quality of that output.

The entire set of arguments around "using LLMs correctly" boils down to voluntarily introducing friction: doctoring the prompt and/or carefully reviewing the output. But the experience is not designed for that approach; nothing about the output of ChatGPT suggests even remotely that it's a v1 draft.

From another perspective, friction is texture. Yes, "frictionless" things are easier. But "easy" in a vacuum is worth nothing. What's valuable is making the RIGHT THING easier to do than the WRONG THING. Otherwise, people will happily go down the path of least resistance and do the wrong thing!!!

Algorithmic feeds are the apotheosis of frictionless design: you no longer need to browse, here are all the things you could possibly need right at your fingertips one after the other. Except it's then impossible to *find* anything, ever again. The data, structured for feeds, resists navigation.

If you say "we are making it frictionless" you are actually just moving the friction somewhere else, and because it's *unintentional* it's likely going to be making the experience worse. Consider the "frictionless" ability to generate 1000 AI job applications, vs the friction the recruiter now has.

Haters tell me "but that's not the technology's fault, you can also use it to enhance your own writing rather than outsource everything to the machine" And this is a great lesson in User Experience Design: you CAN but you WON'T, because of how the software is designed. Let's talk about friction.
