Franz Neumann doctoral thesis title original title is (very) deceptive: while in English Governance (first time I found it in any work) of the Rule of Law points the inextricable relationship between law and state; in German Herrschaft des Gesetzes points to a different type of relation.

The story goes: in 1941, the Institute for Social Research was torn apart by a fierce debate about Pollock’s “State Capitalism” thesis. This supposedly made further collaboration with members like Neumann & Kirchheimer impossible. The problem with this story is: it never happened
