the good thing about travelling is that you constantly gather teaching material. today's example: a man insists my seat is actually his, eventually has to admit this is not the case, bangs his head when getting up to move, and berates me for it. now, class, describe the defence mechanisms at work!

still not so sure whether this is the right way to greet new students, or whether it has potential to either foster narcissism or social anxiety (depending on how you’re inclined)… but perhaps that's just me.

whirlwind of a weekend: spent 15 hrs on the train, gave a talk on loneliness at the meeting of the german society for suicide prevention in bayreuth, went to the frankfurt theatre (e.t.a. hoffmann’s “der sandmann”, fantastic!), almost got run over by the apple wine express, and had great thai food 🥰

proud of judith hirschmiller who led this massive effort: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... we compared the depressive symptom structure in people with & without cancer & other physical illness; for the first time based on a representative cohort with highly standardized medical assessments ⬇️

keep an eye out: the validation study of our 8-item short version of the intersession experience questionnaire (ieq; originally by orlinsky and colleagues) was just accepted. it captures therapy-related thoughts, emotions, actions… between sessions. looking forward to working much more with it 🙌

what a writing retreat looks like when you are in austria. ridiculous!

i call these “formatting word documents is my passion” moments. i might just leave it like this. the regression plot was supposed to be *just a tiny bit* bigger, but this way, it looks far more interesting.

this might be a bit of a long shot, but is anyone here willing to share documents of an ERC (starting) grant? or any insights into the process, things you wished you knew before…? i would be very thankful as i think it is quite different from programs i am familiar with so far. ☀️

also, the couple of weeks of annual leave deserve a recap. had a fab time eating crab sandwiches in devon, swimming in coves with just a handful of other people all wearing neoprene (and this in england! so you know it was cold), and walking an alpaca that looked like the young liam gallagher. 🦀🐳☀️🌳🦙

had a great time presenting my research on loneliness at the dept. of mental disorders of the university medical center freiburg. thank you to eva klein (tt-assistant prof. in the dept. of psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy) for the invitation. i am sure i will visit this lovely city again!

on days like today, i wonder how anyone gets anything done in klagenfurt in the summer.

lastly, i talked about intersession processes (thoughts, memories, fantasies… regarding therapy/the therapist in daily life) and their relation to suicidal ideation at the between- & within-person level. effects at both levels were relevant - which has implications for monitoring/feedback systems ☝️

Tamara's mixed-methods study in healthcare professionals working in (psycho-)oncology concerned suicide prevention in this context, and potential barriers standing in its way in clinical practice (but also facilitators), such as suicide myths. Read her paper: link.springer.com/article/10.1...

Judith showed a network analysis of a survey of >600 cancer patients that included psychological constructs to understand suicidal crises better, expanding established theories with the perspective of primary/secondary control. Find a previous paper here: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.... /

Julie presented her qualitative master's thesis, for which she interviewed psychotherapists (look at the range!!) about the treatment of suicidal patients, with a special focus on the therapeutic alliance and competencies that enable productive work, of which mastery emerged as an important factor.

first off, a poster: Julian presented work in progress - using routine clinical data - that investigated changes in personality functioning as a potential mechanism of changes in suicidal ideation in inpatient treatment. stay tuned 👀 (currently waiting for new data to look at a larger sample)
