In #Mathstoday I demonstrated how AI can be used to aid revision by generating similar questions. I've found this useful recently and hope my Y12 students can do this to prepare for end of year exams

More of a formal intro to Hypothesis testing in #MathsToday, introducing key terminology. Wondering whether to simply my conclusions to 'reject null' or 'do not reject null' (with a sentence on context as required). How necessary is the phrase 'in/sufficient evidence to...'? Do others do without?

Someone I follow has a great parabola plotting tool on their website. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Side note: Do any other maths teachers try to avoid the words 'right' and 'too' during conversations with students? Can be very confusing depending on the subject! Isn't English silly 🫠

We recapped the 3 Hypothesis Tests for the IB AISL course in #mathstoday using a card sort I whipped up yesterday based on a previous revision task. Tried to keep it as simple as possible. Would you change/add/remove anything?

Normal distribution revision today with Y13 using the excellent set of questions from Christos Nikolaidis (not on bsky?) in #MathsToday. Some of them finally appreciating how useful a diagram is for these questions!

I did the AMSP stats 1 course online a couple of years ago and remember a brilliant Desmos file that demonstrated taking 2 samples from a normally distributed population as a way to demo hypothesis testing. I didn't save it and can't find anything similar from Googling. Any thoughts? #ALevelMaths

In #mathstoday (well, yesterday) I began my journey with Y10 towards further trig, specifically the sine rule, via circle theorems after being inspired by Don Steward (donsteward.blogspot.com/2012/04/sine...). This meant a lesson on constructions and thinking about centers of triangles. Great fun!

In #mathstoday we used images from the @mathforge.org site to derive the formula for arithmetic series (code.mathforge.org/Arithmetic/). This followed from Monday's lesson on my Monzo 1p challenge to see if the class could work out how much I'm going to save (monzo.com/features/1p-...)

In #mathstoday we calculated the bond angle in methane. It was nice to follow this idea through that I'd had last week. I borrowed molymod kits from the chem department to help with the visualisation and this diagram provided a good amount of scaffolding (davechessgames.blogspot.com/2018/01/calc...)

In #MathsToday (well, lunch as we ran out of time yesterday) a couple of Y10 students finished off a Sierpinski Christmas tree. Inspired by @debhennessy.bsky.social. Only managed 64 tetrahedra, but with Möbius paper garlands

In #MathsToday Y10 were completing the square for the first time. We started off with these images from MEI which helped develop some useful language. For the rest of the lesson we were thinking about big squares and tiny squares thanks to Rose's observation

In #MathsToday we modelled the SpaceX Starship as a cylinder and cone to approximate its volume. Unfortunately, the space/rocket fanatic was absent today!

In #MathsToday I had the 3D models out to help Y13 visualise a pyramid question. Some said how they wished they could have this with them in an exam! A reminder that visualisation is such a powerful skill, one I probably take for granted.

In #MathsToday Y9 were in their element completing a @mathsbox.bsky.social treasure hunt on finding lengths using trig ratios. Was lovely to take a back seat! Also, new school shoes arrived in the post 👞

@teakayb.bsky.social I think the shortest path is this: Write the number in binary and read from left to right: If it's a 0, do "x2". If it's a 1, do "x2", then "+1". 100 decimal = 1100100 binary, so it's +1, ×2, +1, ×2, ×2, ×2, +1, ×2, ×2.

In #MathsToday with a small Y11 class we were expanding triple brackets. Students rolled my d8 dice to create their own questions. Really need to get some d10... Any recommendations for where to buy?

In #mathstoday Y8 enjoyed a few number detectives from @mathsbox.bsky.social. I enjoyed describing how one can develop relationships with different numbers as I was reminded that 56=7×8. Similar thing the other week when 7, 11, and 13 popped up and I could Y11 that cool trick...if you know you know.

In #MathsToday Y10 were solving this fiendish set of questions on Transum: www.transum.org/Maths/Exerci.... Highlight was a s's suggestion of simply rearranging question 32. A nice reminder not to blindly follow an algorithm.

In #MathsToday (well, yesterday...) we were expanding brackets in Y9 and enjoyed working through this variation grid from mathsbot.com/grids/binomi.... We used pattern spotting to fill in the last couple of answers.
