I just want to give a huge shoutout to @roottrees.com, a game that completely changed my 2025. First off, the game: the combination of search with fill-in-the-blank deduction hit the spot for me and made me eager for more. It kicked off a year of playing, thinking about, and making deduction games.

This game is amazing

The Simplified Chinese localization of Roottrees was the most complicated one we did by far. Our translator 赤铜/Syakudo did an amazing job, including redoing all the graphic designs in images. And the response has been way better than we ever could have expected. Chinese players love Roottrees!

I think Chronoquartz deserves a lot more attention! Graphics-wise it seems to be mostly stuff from asset stores, but the puzzle design is really great. It’s a loop game but instead of time it’s based on screens traversed. Think of it as a 2D Outer Wilds meets Minit.

One game from my childhood that I keep coming back to is Jones in the Fast Lane. I often have thought of how I could make a modern game with a similar formula and never really came up with any viable ideas, but I just played Consume Me and it really nailed a similar vibe.

So, “Order of the Sinking Star” by Thekla was just announced, which takes several small free games (two of which are mine) and gives them a major graphical upgrade and mashes up their rulesets. I haven’t been very involved but it’s a great concept and looks cool.

I don’t have a hot take about awards shows, but I do think 2025 was a crazy good year for games, and if you enjoy playing them you’re probably still working through your backlog. The amount of creativity in this industry is overwhelming

Finished The Seance of Blake Manor and really enjoyed it. It's a game that leans more on the exploration and investigative aspects of the detective genre rather than deduction. By the time it asks you to form hypotheses, you should already know what's going on since you found everything.

A surprising amount of narrative game developers at #AdventureX are using Godot for their next projects. I’m not sure if this is just indie game developers in general or something specific to the niche

Valve isn’t perfect, but I think it’s worth pointing out how open their hardware is. You can boot to Linux or install whatever you want. If you want to use Steam you just have to pay them $100 for unlimited builds during development. It’s worth it just to avoid sending builds constantly!

I generally consider myself a puzzle game sicko and try to play all the games I can, but I cannot for the life of me figure out sokoban games. I just suck at them and don’t find them fun.

I’m really impressed with public transit in Munich. It’s so easy to use and clean and convenient. Also they have bike lanes everywhere! Toronto should aspire to be this good.

Made it to Munich, despite a (frankly rude) snowstorm in Toronto the day I left. What a charming city! Order some random apple pasty I couldn’t pronounce and it blew my mind.

There are so many cool games being worked on in Godot. Hopefully I can meet some of these developers next week at GodotFest!
