Good analysis here from @snellarthur.bsky.social. The estimates you see of Venezuela’s oil reserves only really make sense at extremely high oil prices - much of it may end up being uneconomic to produce even before you factor in political, security and legal risks.

One simple example of what the PM could say.

Reminder: The US has refused to join the International Criminal Court because it argues extraterritorial justice is incompatible with national sovereignty and citizen's rights.

This is certainly one possible interpretation of the combination of US Venezuela and Ukraine policies.

Trump: "We're going to have our very large United States oil companies go in, spend billions of dollars, fix the badly broken infrastructure and start making money for the country. And we are ready to stage a second and much larger attack if we need to do so."

World leaders generally treat the rules around directly targeting one another – and civilian administrations – with a fair bit of respect, because what goes around comes around. Bombing raids and removing a president without a declaration of war quite literally changes the rules.
