Went to Bristol recently and one of the advantages of a niche interest in modernism is that while the suspension bridge was heaving, both Clifton Cathedral and All Saints (with windows by John Piper) had not a soul to be seen.

Rachel Kushner’s The Flamethrowers is my favourite novel of the last decade, so I was nervous about reading Creation Lake. An informant page turner that’s also a meditation on where humans come from and where they’re going, it’s like the prehistoric caves it references - there’s so much in there.

Finally watched Robot Dreams, and it’s such a great film - humorous, heartfelt and heartbreaking, with a real sense of place but bags of imagination. Have loved all Pablo Berger’s films so far (though yet to see Abracadabra). It’s a shame he’s not made more.
