Very curious about what the next 3D Mario will be like. Feel like half of Nintendo's major titles since Mario Odyssey have had a similar sandbox/collectathon thing going on, I wonder if after a decade the next 3D Mario will push the pendulum back towards more restrictive design.

Played Mina the Hollower. Very good! Great level design- there's tons of unique platforming mechanics and exploration is very rewarding. Artwork is excellent, lots of variety and detail in the environments without compromising legibility, character animations are fun too.

Petal Crash is very good. Been playing it with a drawing tablet, which feels more intuitive than its controller/keyboard-based input methods. Poking at the mobile version (from Itchio) today, which it feels very appropriate for- it's a shame app stores are so hostile towards finished games!

Despite looking like Python, Nim does not have a huge array of machine learning libraries and educational resources.

Started watching Ashita no Joe. Extremely good first episode! I didn't think 60s TV cartoons were capable of looking so good. Some pretty ambitious character animation, action sequences have good story boards and very distinct drawings.

Started the Witch Hat Atelier anime. I feel like I've seen a number of anime that imitate the "Ged summons the shadow" scene from Wizard of Earthsea, but changed so the protagonist's mistake is from pure stupidity rather than being a showoff (eg: Fullmetal Alchemist). Curious why that is.

Very intrigued by this thing. Mainstream adoption of gyro + trackpad input is good, but whenever I've held the Steam Deck (which has very similar controls) my first thought is "wow, this is not comfortable at all".

I feel like the greatest strength of Splatoon's co-op mode is how laser focused it is on arcade PvE gameplay, with no itemization/skill tree systems. Kinda funny seeing Nintendo go the opposite direction and release multiple iterations of "Vampire Survivors in Splatoon".

Kinda curious about what the history of video game influences on action manga/anime looks like. I feel like there's a lot of martial arts movie-adjacent tropes that have been replaced by more game-y ideas, but a lot of that must be confirmation bias.

JJK S3 finale was awesome. Genuinely love how in-your face the show's CGI sequences are, lots of very artificial demoscene-ish effects- it's a good contrast with some of the more loose/expressionistic 2D animation in the series.

Chainsaw man over. I think the ending is interesting, but it would be better if the past 100 chapters of the series were fun to read.

Kinda curious why Jujutsu Kaisen S3 has so much narration over its biggest action cuts. I don't think I've seen a single action anime that does this so much.

I am so good at finding closure-related memory corruption errors in Nim.

The CICADAMATA demo is good. Generally not huge on combo meter games but this one's fun, benefits a lot from how short the levels are. Took a minute to figure out the way to get high scores is to attack an enemy as much as possible without killing it rather than just shooting it in the face.

Every project written in Nim is heavily dependent on 'fieldPairs', a standard library macro with very little documentation besides this ominous warning: "Has a bug that affects symbol binding in the loop body."

JJK S3 good this week. The rotoscope sequence is clever, very impressed by how varied the show's dialogue-heavy scenes are.

JJK S3 preview is very good. Pulls a lot of interesting ideas from exposition-heavy material (the will reading scene with the swaying ceiling light is cool). Lots of clever uses of 3DCG, I really liked the bridge sequence. Giggling and clapping whenever Gosso does a weird fisheye shot.

I see a lot of game developers grumble about how "metroidvania" or "roguelike" are bad genre descriptors, but I feel like "wizardrylike" would be a way more coherent descriptor for games with character sheets and turn-based combat than "role playing game".

Started watching Prehistoric Planet. Very impressive CGI creatures, but it's a kinda lousy documentary. If you have Attenborough narrating an animation of a pack of T Rex swimming in the ocean you should follow it up with 10 minutes of Paleontologists explaining their reasoning for it.

Game developers need to stop making 3D platformers with twin stick controllers in mind. Video game genre entirely about lining up your camera and then holding forward + jump and the "normal" input for them is the one where you need to wait for the camera to point the direction you want.

Played the 500 Caliber Contractz demo. Weird game. There's barely anything resembling level design, just a big pile of concrete with some places to go. Pressing any 2 buttons is guaranteed to send you flying forward. Maybe the most pure expressive platformer I've played? I kinda respect it.

Nim is a fun language until you need to do literally anything involving inheritance.

Deadlock's big character update is good. Feels like there's a good distribution of new player-friendly characters and more gimmicky ones like Doorman. I'm not a MOBA player so it's interesting to compare what abilities can do compared to hero shooters- I like how Victor's ultimate is a passive.

Playing Lorn's Lure. Frustrating. Levels avoid explicit obstacles like spikes in favor of making any fall greater than 20 feet instantly kill you. Many intended falls are around 18 feet, so a lot of this game involves repeatedly breaking your ankles until you have a sense of where the obstacles are.

Deadlock's map design is weird. Across the middle it's fine (lane phase, midboss, bridge power-ups) but the rest is confusing. - Walker choke points cause spam-heavy fights. - Rooftops are too high for normal shooter high ground, they're only useful for movement.

Kinda funny playing Yellow Taxi and seeing Atari announce a new Bubsy 3D that *doesn't* use tank controls. No ingenuity! No whimsy!

Poking at Deadlock again. I'm able to pull my weight in matches now, but I'm still not convinced the moba elements contribute much to the game. Sliding into boxes is kinda fun.

Played Yellow Taxi Go Vroom. Good! The movement is great- tank controls are unique, launching myself off of ramps is a lot of fun. Level design's kinda hit-or-miss, there's a lot of gimmicks that don't complement the fast-paced movement.

Been loosely following the development of the "Jai" language. J Blow markets it as a "gamedev language" but the main selling points are "no garbage collection" and "run code during compilation" which don't seem remotely useful to me. His first game in the language is a block-pushing game.

Reading about obscure systems programming languages. Here are my thoughts: Nelua: Kinda looks like Go but with lua-inspired syntax. Static typing, minimal OOP features. A lot of language 'features' rely on writing C-style macros. Can't imagine why someone would use this over LuaJIT.

Kaizen's great. Some major quality-of-life improvements over Opus Magnum- not having to restart the simulation for every small change is a huge deal, editing instructions generally feels smoother. Game's atmosphere feels a little twee compared to Opus, though I haven't gotten too far.

Picked up Hyper Demon. Neat. Combat feels good, very structured- There's enemy variety! There's space control! Movement feels bad. It's hard to tell when I'm on the ground, all movement abilities are mapped to the jump key and have very subtle audio/visual cues. A lot of aimlessly mashing space.

Played the ULTRAKILL demo. It's okay I guess. Replicates a lot of what I don't like about DOOM 2016, you can get very far by running in a circle and mashing the shoot button. I like that it's a lot more straightforward than doom though: no quicktime event mechanics, less platforming.
