You know what rocks? Public libraries! I borrowed Three Rocks by Bill Griffith from mine, and it is an incredible book. Part biography of Ernie Bushmiller/part analysis of a comic character/part best-of Nancy strips collection, it is informative, funny, & enthralling. A love letter to comics!

I recently read Science Comics: The Periodic Table of Elements by Jon Chad & from @01firstsecond.bsky.social. It is an amazing treasure trove of information and a fun read to boot. For instance, I learned Mendeleev designed the version we know leaving spaces for unknown and undiscovered elements (!)

Instead of asking chatgpt, why not ask a librarian? You'll get real answers and they won't tell you to kill yourself.

Just read Bleeding Hearts #3, and it is a refreshing and suspenseful take on zombies. The character work and plotting is great, but the artwork by Stipan Morian takes everything to the next level. It’s so atmospheric and expressive, reminds me of a combination of Jack Davis, Wrightson, & Ploog.

In Superman/Spider-Man #1 my favorite story by far was the Power Girl/Punisher team-up by @gailsimone.bsky.social and Belén Ortega. The artwork popped. Kara’s characterization was spot-on, and Frank got to grin. The only thing I may have liked better would be if he got to smile more. Thank you!

You know what brings me joy? Reading @richtommaso.bsky.social’s Black Phoenix comics. I just reviewed In the Garden of Earthly Delights, a digest-sized crime novella from the series. It’s gorgeous, clever, and suspenseful. You can join in the fun by joining Rich’s Patreon, too!

Great news! Danger and Other Unknown Risks by @ryannorth.ca & @ericafails.bsky.social is a wry and engrossing page-turner of a book. Buy it or check it out from your local library. I’m glad I did!

Checked this book from the local library (Libraries rule!), and it was great! Boy Vs. Shark by @paulgilligan.bsky.social is a funny and moving book about growing up in the 1970s and dealing with toxic masculinity. I loved it, and you should read it ASAP.

I recently checked this book out from my local library and was reminded of things: 1. Libraries rule and we should use them more! 2. Hope Larson is very good at making comics. Very Bad at Math is a great YA graphic novel about an exceptional person trying to hide one big problem. Go read it!

H.R. 7661 is a national book banning bill which seeks to remove any book that "involves gender dysphoria or transgenderism" from all public schools in the US. This would ban all my books, & any other book with trans themes, from public schools. PLEASE call your House Reps & say: NO ON H.R. 7661!

Recent comics reading round-up: I just read all three issues of Wrestle Heist! by @thekylestarks.bsky.social and HOLY CROW are you missing out if you are not reading this series. It’s got action, intrigue, jokes, pathos and pretty much everything I want in a comic book.

I finally got around to reading Run Book One, and it is FANTASTIC. Nothing is ever settled when “progress” is made, and it’s informative to have a historical look to deal with the current political and social milieu. Not a damned thing has changed, it seems.

It’s like watching The Grandmaster, only not a special effect 😳

You know what rocks? Libraries! I just borrowed History Comics: Rosa Parks & Claudette Colvin and it was eye-opening. I appreciated learning much more about Colvin, the inner workings of the civil rights movement, and the effort it takes to make incremental changes. From @01firstsecond.bsky.social

I got this book almost 3 years ago, and I am so glad I finally read it. Steady Rollin’ by Fred Noland is a funny, thoughtful, moving collections of autobio comics. And the best part: He’s got two new books coming out later this year, so I’ll get to see more of his excellent work soon!

The latest book in my great graphic novel catch-up: The Girl Who Sang. It is a story of survival and hope in the face of fascism. This holocaust survivor’s story is sadly reminiscent of what is happening right now in the USA. Whatever happened to “never again?!?”

Hoops by @tavaresbooks.bsky.social is a great graphic novel version of the first Indiana girls’ basketball tournament in 1976. The sports sequences are suspenseful, the small moments emotional, & the whole enterprise is satisfying & informative. Great for fans of sports and history!

What was your childhood cinema? Mine was the two theater Squire Cinemas in New Windsor, NY. It was behind my dad’s pizzeria, and I saw movies all the time: Rocky 3, Ghostbusters, Return of the Jedi, The Toxic Avenger, Treasure of the Four Crowns, Jaws 3-D, and many more. It closed in 1986.

I just read all the books available in the Fourth Dimensional series by @seraji.bsky.social & from @cosmiclion.bsky.social. They are all beautifully drawn, feature great character designs, and contain entertaining adventures. The plot hits the ground running, and it’s great to see an artist shine.

I read The Novel Life of Jane Austen by Janice Barchas and Isabel Greenberg recently and it is phenomenal! It mingles words from her letters and works to depict three distinct episodes of the famous author’s life. I think it would appeal to fans and newbies, too.

Have you read Spectators by Brian K. Vaughan & Niko Henrichon? It’s an epic ghost story that’s about humanity’s potential mass extinction coming about from social media and escalating mass shootings. It’s also a commentary on our growing desensitization from what media experiences we can access.

You know what’s a great series? Absolute Wonder Woman. @kellythompson.bsky.social & @cleanlined.bsky.social raise the bar on stories about the Amazon Princess, recasting her in an epic way, with new abilities and weapons but the same mission of compassion. The artwork makes everything next level.

Agreed. It’s more about censorship than anything else.

I just read Justice Warriors vol.1 by @mattbors.bsky.social & @benclarkson.bsky.social and it is a biting commentary on our lives and times. It features amazing action sequences & comedic timing, awesome artwork, and very memorable visuals. Another triumph from @ahoycomicmags.bsky.social!
