I've been rereading @johnmajoreason.bsky.social's outstanding Big House on the Prairie, which argues among other things that we oversell the "prisons are all in rural white places" claim. I wanted to get a sense of the numbers, so produced this. I'll explain, but tl;dr: he's absolutely right.

Not to reopen speed camera discourse again, but here's yet another study finding that these cameras create significant safety benefits. www.pnas.org/doi/abs/10.1... (Okay yes, I *am* reopening this discourse, because I will fight anyone in defense of automated traffic enforcement.)

But they do. There's data showing they do. This by someone who I think is less carceral than me and I'm betting does not own shares of Flock. What you suggest likely works better. But they also take more time, face tougher political hurdles, so there are transition paths to think about too.

Automated speed cameras, which detect and fine speeding motorists, reduced total collisions by around 30% and injuries by around 16%, on average, within 900 feet of intersections in the first 7 months of deployment in New York City. In PNAS: https://ow.ly/CHq550XHyla
