For DAY 333 of my year long retrospective on made for TV movies that need a DVD/Blu Ray release, I chose Nowhere to Run (1978), a drama about a man who fakes his own death to start a new life & begins by devising a system to make his fortune playing blackjack. David Janssen is terrific (as always)

Hey, we made it. Thanks to everyone who sat down and watched How Awful About Allan with us. It's a good one, and really works as an early marker for the kind of classic and gothic beats most of Curtis Harrington's telefilm work would lean into. Plus, Joan Hackett. ❤️

Joan Hackett would become a familiar face in the made for TV genre movie and appeared in some great films, including Five Desperate Women, Reflection of Murder, Dead of Night and The Possessed I love her. Did I mention that?

If this were a modern-day movie, a dark shape would have shot up out of the blurriness and we would have cut to black in that last shot.

The fire in the kitchen was started by one of four things: 1) a Jawa 2) A scrunched up Phantasm person 3) one of the DON"T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK things or 4) Julie Harris.

I'm glad this aired in a 90-minute timeslot. The length is just right. At the moment I started to lose it a bit, he gets locked in the closet with fire. What!? Allan!

How Awful About Allan's screenwriter Henry Farrell was best known as a novelist and shortly before his death had completed A Piece of Clarisse, which is about a man receiving a woman’s body parts in the mail! It is still unpublished, which feels criminal to me.

Part of me feels a bit like Allan should live in a house more like a REBECCA kind of estate, rather than in the suburbs. But part of the fun is that it is set amidst many other houses and families, all with their own Allans. HOW DOUR ABOUT DAVID.

In some ways, How Awful About Allan is similar to Don't Go to Sleep, which we watched last month in how it deals with people repressing guilt while also trying to pass that bad feeling onto someone else. This is where our worst monsters are created.

Yesterday when I watched this, I thought "Why the heck is trying to drive?" Today, I'm having the same thoughts. I understand that he's scared. Now, I'm worried that the "awful" thing about him is that he might be stupid.

I love a good (or bad) Found Footage Film. And the hazy POV cam reminds me of modern FFF stuff. Strange shaped figures moving around in the darkness and approaching the camera. Modern day stuff would probably be a bit more jump scare laden. But it all make for the creepiness.

As I mentioned How Awful About Allan is based on Henry Farrell’s book of the same name which was published in 1963. Anthony Perkins claimed he was given the galleys beforehand and fell in love with it.

The made for TV movie was just getting off the ground in 1970, when How Awful About Allan premiered. Just a few dozens films aired that season. Allan did well, garnering a 22.0/36 rating, which means 36% of the TV viewing audience tuned in to see Allan (even though he couldn't see us)

His fuzziness reminded me of when I was in 4th grade. That's when my eyesight started going hazy. Before I learned that I needed glasses, the nuns in the Catholic School I went to had far less sympathetic responses to me saying I couldn't read or see something.

I love how familiar some of the sets/ spaces in this time period can get. I'm pretty certain the asylum hallway has been a hallway in a cop show or maybe Kolchak.

Curtis Harrington only made a handful of made for TV movies, and I'm sure we'll discuss them all here, but How Awful About Allan was his first, and it established a working relationship with both Aaron Spelling (exec. producer) and George Edwards (producer).

My favorite thing about this movie are the blurry POV shots They're like the wolf POV shots in WOLFEN or the Demon-cam in THE EVIL DEAD. Whenever they're happening, I pay a lot of attention.

My sister needs help. She and her family have 30 days to move because the landlord wants the house back. It's not likely they can find a place that will allow 4 small dogs and 4 cats. She needs help rehoming them so they won't go to the shelter. Anyone in the Denton, TX area that can help?
