Joe Haldeman said he had written the rough draft of a Conan novel while deployed to Vietnam, whose manuscript ended as "casualties of a fire fight." If you excuse me, I must know lament that we could have had sword-and-sorcery from Joe Haldeman, joining David Drake as a MilSF titan that did both.

I have the paperback edition from Baen. The memoirs by the late David Drake and Karl Edward Wagner are poignant. Thanks to a friend who shared a digital file of his copy, I was able to see a film interview with Drake done a few months prior to his passing in 2023 where he spoke of MWW.
