After 10 days of having an app on the Mac App Store, I'm starting to think we are all just owners of storefronts in a dead mall, and the only true business out there are the ad services telling you to advertise in the dead mall. It’s encouraging Video Barbershop is making headway in discoverability. Searched “editing VHS on a Mac” and Reddit and Google had surprisingly delightful responses. 🤗

After quitting my job and developing this app over the last year, I’m proud to announce it has shipped and is now available! It’s been a long road, but I’m passionate about collecting and editing VHS and truly believe this is a great tool to add to any video editing pipeline, not just for VHS.

Was given this cassette tape of the radio show The Bickersons. Was not familiar with it. Despite a cat related bit that hasn’t aged well, the show is really funny and really amusing, as Don Ameche was a childhood favorite in Trading Places and Cocoon! Used my two apps to create the video.

Video Vector is getting feature packed with basically a shader language, but instead of pixel based is more geometry based. Three equations here (coloring background, lines and faces). That and simple vertex info. But basically just three equations.

Got my SoundBeast video capture device, which I’m liking a lot, especially native file system support for OSX, which my ClearClick didn’t. However, it revealed that my SuperVHS VCR might be toast. So that’s super annoying. (see what I did there)

Estate sale. Three dozen VHS grabbed. 3 VCRs ruined from a moldy and wrinkled tape. Sigh. Was a long day, but everything is up and running again now… though the tape was too wrinkled to save even after it was clean.

Recent estate sale find, a commemorative CD of STS-135, the final space shuttle launch. Much to my surprise it also contained footage of the launch itself from multiple cameras onboard the reusable rockets themselves... the entire launch, detachment and falling back into the ocean. Incredible!

Got a new cassette tape converter and getting around to some thrifted tapes. One simply labeled “Yellow” on one side and “White” on the other is a learning to read program with music and “turn the page” style instructions… but some kid recorded over the beginning his notes for Chemistry.

As a software engineer, I can’t tell you the joy in reorganizing code and discovering duplicate methods or taking highly specific code, coupled to one structure, then templatizing it out for general use. Just warms the soul.

Tesla was denied trademarks for both Robotaxi and Cybercab. Henceforth, I will be referring to their vehicle as a PwnedyExpress.

I love the erudite essays on YouTube breaking down various topics using words rarely heard in dive bars. I would love to make a video in that style for a weird VHS tape, “Shoji defiantly balances cultural racism and octogenarian malaise. His Engrish accent used as both ballast and ammunition…”

Pretty excited about this latest feature! Time will vary but it was doing a bang up job at about 8 mins per hour of video. And that was on my oldish M1 Mac Mini.

Best investing advice I can give is buy Forever stamps. Far more valuable than crypto around the holidays.

How long before the next generation thinks all these steel kitchen appliances are as antiquated as the 80’s saw the drab greens, yellows and oranges of 70’s kitchens? Cars and appliances are so boring in grey tones now that I feel like we are due for color explosions to devalue steel kitchens.

This month’s VHS of the Month Club arrived today from @foundfootagefest.com Looks like I’m in for a treat!

Tried capturing a video of using my video editing app and it worked well but the onslaught of “ums” and “uhs” made it clear I need to try again and bullet point an outline to refer to. Vamping is quite a skill.

Video editing app for the Mac is in its final stages of development and entering the “let me just polish this one thing” phase. I expect that phase to continue for the foreseeable future and drive me into a downward spiral of madness.
