6 June 1855: The Allies began the third bombardment of Sevastopol during the Crimean campaign. It enabled the British to advance and capture the Quarries in front of the Redan, and for the French to capture the Mamelon Redoubt ahead of a major assault on the Redan and the Malakov. #CrimeanWar

5 April 1854: The first troops of the British contingent sent to defend Turkey against Russia arrived at Gallipoli. The force consisted of the Rifle Brigade and the 7th and 11th Companies of the Royal Engineers under the command of Lieutenant-General Sir George Brown. #CrimeanWar

By the time the Crimean War began in 1853, Cochrane was an old man. But that wasn’t why the Navy didn’t give him a command. Bluntly, the British concluded Cochrane was too likely to lead a daring attack and risk the entire fleet. Aged 80, he was still a nutter. (50/53)

In 1858, during the Crimean War, Florence Nightingale invented a new type of graph to show military leaders just how many of their men were being lost to disease, mainly infectious (the gray areas). It was way, way more than to battle (the orange areas). Military leaders should know how germs work.

Gen. Lord Alexander Russell (16 Sept 1821–10 Jan 1907) was a British officer who fought in Crimean War. He was an Aide-de-Camp in Canada to Lord Sydenham from 1840-41 & Lord Elgin in 1847. As Commander of British Troops in Canada from May 1883-1888, he ensured the country’s defence. amzn.to/3Z4743n
