So I am a little frustrated that I cannot find a news source that has covered the Hong Kong Version of both the Famicom and Disk System. These were officially distributed by Simon & Toys under license by Nintendo in the early 1990s.

It looks like a particular grading company announced that they are now starting to grade Japanese video games and I have to ask... why? Well money obviously but I just have this icky feeling about this announcement and a fear of what this will do to the secondhand market.

We've got a monolith of an anniversary today: the 40th for the OG Dragon Quest for Famicom in Japan. This was a landmark release in 1986, lifting elements from the dungeon-crawling RPGs popular on Japanese PCs and reworking them for console with a dream team of writers, artists, and musicians.

Something I don't quite get with recent compilation re-releases is the inconsistency of using the original box artwork. Like there's some which retains the original packaging but others that have to scrub logos and other text. What's up with that?

Been seeing more talk about game collection apps recently, and I've personally tried so many of them but they all fail the import test where it can't properly account for Japanese games. The only one that passes for me is the genericly named Retro Game Collector but it aint perfect.

You know maybe its not the greatest idea to release Japanese games in a country that doesn't speak the language but it's perhaps an even worse idea that I bought it anyways. At least I have the excuse of it being for "research purposes" but still.

I'm going to a game convention 2 weeks from now and I just booked tickets to go see a very interesting "movie" at a nearby theater... but now I have to pray that I don't get spoiled until then cause the "movie" recently leaked out. Not only did they not want you importing games, they also wanted to recruit kids to be little narcs against anyone selling imported or unlicensed games. It's one thing to be against bootlegs, but they wanted complete and total market control and were so brazen about it!

I found something interesting that gives us another sign of Nintendo being against imports. In Computer Entertainer Volume 5 Number 11 from February 1987, Nintendo advised the publication that adapting Japanese Famicom cartridges to work on NES systems is "illegal" and will void your warranty.

Regarding the recent Google search announcement, I would highly suggest bookmarking your favorite websites before they become even harder to search for. I'm really worried what this is going to do for @famiwiki.net and other niche websites like it.

I've been reading Henk Rogers book called The Perfect Game which is basically the story of Tetris within the perspective of Rogers. When the story introduces Nintendo, he talks about the problems with floppy disks on computers and how easily they can be pirated. ...Yeah uh about that.

Ok so apparently nobody was properly informed that a prototype for an unreleased port of Galaga surfaced. It was released back in August 2025. Should be noted that the program ROM was recovered but not the character ROM. The graphics had to be recreated in order to be playable. youtu.be/jzWuK3qzk_Y

They did not forget, phew! What remains are the two unreleased Virtual Boy games, would be cool if they get released in August but we'll see what happens.

I have been skimming archived scans of Famimaga and stumbled upon some never before posted pre-release screenshots of Nintendo's NES version of Tetris. Notably the "tetrads" look completely different than the ones from the final game. Who knows if anything else is different from this prototype.

Prior to 2023, famiwiki.net was a genealogy resource website which offered a free family tree builder. This lasted roughly from 2010 to 2016 as the domain expired. 7 years later, it would be picked up by us for our Famicom wiki website.

It got patched, was fun while it lasted.

So I did some quick math regarding my Famicom cartridge count, at the end of September 2024 I had around 463 cartridges while today I have 591 carts. That means I had purchased on average at least a single Famicom cartridge every single week between September 2024 to May 2026.

So uh did Nintendo already forget they had a Virtual Boy app? Last time they updated was in March, and that was a couple weeks after the app initially released. The rest of the announced games are coming this year, so what the heck is the hold up?

Been seeing more talk about secondhand prices for video games recently, a lot of that discussion boils down to saying something like "this is why emulation is important" which really undermines the other ways of playing games. Like you do realize flash carts and soft mods exist, right?

I really hope there are people out there who genuinely find FamiWiki to be useful whether that be for the known and popular things to the extremely niche stuff. It is also completely ad-free for your browsing pleasure.

Been a while since I've been able to get some Famicom carts but this is surely an interesting pile.

Stumbled on a video I recorded back in 2022 showcasing that you can actually press both left and right at the same time on unmodified hardware... if you are playing on a Famicom using a controller in the expansion port. Also keep and mind I am using first party controllers so this is all official.

So turns out FamiWiki is for whatever reason a cited source in the German Wikipedia article about the Namco game Battle City. Probably not a good idea to source a wiki but this is funny on its own.

Tried out Super ZSNES and while its a cool novelty to try out these "enhancements" I really don't see much of a reason why you'd want to use this over the well established software emulators we have today. Also rubs me the wrong way that the enhancements are on by default, not the other way around.

I'm so glad we are rediscovering the original Japanese sources that western press outlets straight up stole without credit.

Kind of odd that on English Wikipedia, Tetris is considered as a singular video game but Puyo Puyo is considered a series of video games, and that's despite the fact that both had similar evolution in their game design across several decades. How is one puzzle game singular but another a series?

Ended up stumbling onto a preview for Igo Meikan in the January 26, 1990 issue of Famimaga which is about 16 days after it released for the Famicom. If only the readers at the time knew just how valuable this software would become in the future...

Something irked me when I saw the reporting on the public reveal of the Neo Geo+ AES, something along the lines of it being "better than emulation" as it uses ASICs to re-create the original hardware. I don't think that inherently makes it better, it's just different.

It is with a heavy yet hopeful heart that I announce that my beloved Super Mario Bros. prototype cartridge has left and arrived at its new owner's home. We spent one last day together doing all of its favorite things. The proceeds from this private sale will benefit VGHF doing even more cool shit.

40 years ago, a cassette-based add-on for the Famicom was rolled out in Japan called the Study Box. It was an educational-based system that was only available via rental to students of a specific school course. I managed to uncover some more photos of the Model 1000 unit from issue 5 of Famimaga.

While browsing around for Famicom related material, I stumbled upon some interesting pre-release info. On the left is racing game "3D Rally" by HAL Labs set to be released for the Disk System on December 20, 1987. On the right is the RPG "Bible 1999" by Imagineer which never released for Famicom.
