art is about communication and imo realism shouldn't get in the way of that. in most cases it's better to break physical rules than obscure elements of what you're trying to convey just for the sake of literal representation. but you do have to know what you're trying to convey to make that work

i draw marlin so much because his design is really squirrelly and hard to pin down. i have a very strong sense of it but i'm not great at capturing it consistently so a lot of the time i'm just kind of working with him to try to figure out what he looks like. must touch his face like braille
