This week was my final meeting as Chair of the State Lands Commission and concludes my 7th year of service on the Commission.

The tragic loss of Rob Reiner and his wife Michele is incredibly heartbreaking. Rob’s legacy extends beyond film and television. He championed democracy, civil rights, early childhood education, and marriage equality. My heart is with their family and loved ones as they grieve this profound loss.

Today is National Wreaths Across America Day, a time to honor our fallen heroes and ensure every legacy lives on. With more than 1,000 wreaths laid in tribute, we honor the service and sacrifice of those who gave everything for the freedoms we cherish in California and across the nation.

Big win for California: the CSU just saw its biggest enrollment jump in a decade — enrolling over 471,000 students this fall. That means more first-generation students, more transfer students & more Californians making their dreams come true. Proud of our CSU community!

Proud to see UC Irvine open the nation’s largest all-electric hospital. We toured this project in 2023 and saw firsthand what California’s future looks like: world-class public education driving bold climate action, smarter infrastructure, & life-saving care for California families.

Last week, I was honored to Chair the inaugural Governing Board meeting of CA’s Black-Serving Institution Designation. During the meeting, we recognized 31 campuses across the state for their commitment to advancing Black student success. Together, we are raising the bar for higher education.

On this day of remembrance, California honors the 2,403 lives lost in the tragic attack on Pearl Harbor. We pay tribute to all our fallen heroes, as their stories will continue to shape our nation’s resilience. Their sacrifice to serve will never be forgotten.

The UC Board’s decision to renew the Tuition Stability Plan is deeply disappointing. Raising tuition while students are already struggling to afford basic needs, is the wrong decision.

I opposed yesterday’s UC tuition increase because students shouldn’t be the solution to structural deficits. Californians are struggling to afford basic necessities. Raising tuition only pushes the dream to pursue higher education further out of reach.

Today is the 3rd anniversary of the Club Q mass shooting in Colorado Springs. What was a safe haven for the LGBTQ+ community became the site of unimaginable loss. 5 lives were cut short & countless others were forever changed. We honor the victims & stand with the survivors today and every day.

The return of SNAP benefits is a lifeline for millions of families. But the Republican Big Betrayal Bill guts that progress, slashing funding and imposing harsh work requirements that could rip food off the tables of those who need it most. Working families deserve support, not these cruel cuts.

An atmospheric river will bring heavy rainfall, likely with dangerous flooding and debris flows, to parts of Southern California today into the weekend. A debris flow happens when normally dry soil becomes overly saturated, reaching a point where it turns to a liquid state and flows downhill.

For decades, Oxnard residents raised concerns about the Ormond Beach Power Plant & its impact on local air quality. After 7 months of negotiations, we reached an agreement with the plant’s operator, GenOn, to invest $1.5M in air quality monitoring & public outreach as part of their lease extension.

This Veterans Day, we pay tribute to the brave service members who have stood in defense of our country and to the families who stand beside them. Your sacrifice strengthens our communities, and we are forever grateful.

California & the White House do not share the same values, especially when it comes to feeding our kids. This SNAP/CalFresh disruption wasn’t unavoidable. The administration has the funds to prevent it. This is an intentionally manufactured hunger crisis, & American families are paying the price.

No child’s education should be held hostage by a federal shutdown. Hundreds of California families are scrambling as Head Start centers face closure, threatening 1,000 low-income children and 270 teachers. California will keep fighting so families and kids aren’t left behind.

Millions of Americans rely on SNAP to put food on the table. Trump’s shutdown tried to take it away. The so-called partial funding he agreed to will cover only half of normal benefits, leaving families hungry & struggling. Food security isn’t a bargaining chip. CA will always stand up for families.

As Donald Trump's shutdown delays SNAP benefits, California Volunteers and the California National Guard are on the ground to support food banks and families in need. With expanded aid in San Diego, California is showing the rest of the nation what real leadership looks like.

With SNAP benefits set to lapse tomorrow, our city is stepping up where Washington has failed—delivering life-saving food assistance for working Californians abandoned by a federal government that’s turned a blind eye during this shutdown.

Starting Nov. 1, millions of Americans will lose access to food assistance because of the Republicans’ government shutdown. Before the shutdown, they already voted to slash SNAP by $186 billion — a 20% cut affecting over 40M people. This is intentional hunger — caused by Trump and his GOP allies.

In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, I joined Sen. Susan Rubio — a fearless advocate for survivors — to shine a light on an issue that affects far too many families across CA. Nearly 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men in the U.S. experience domestic violence.
