Every regime relies on pillars of support, from business and labor to faith communities, educational institutions, civil service, the military and police, and more. We can influence people within these pillars, like managers, workers, and consumers, to incentivize movement away from the regime.

Success stories of civil resistance abound: Serbia (2000) overthrew Slobodan Milošević through mass protests; Georgia (2003) secured a change in leadership through the nonviolent protests of the Rose Revolution; and Tunisia (2010) leveraged labor strikes and social media in the Jasmine Revolution.

The "wanna-be king" wants us to stop fighting, choose comfort over courage, and believe we are alone. But we won’t give up. Our task is to build a powerful movement of mass defiance. Together, we can build community resilience and take the strategic, nonviolent action necessary to meet this moment.

Authoritarians follow a playbook. Common tactics include weaponizing investigations against opponents, enabling lawbreaking, using the military domestically, and expanding federal law enforcement power. They also employ regulatory retaliation and, crucially, resist leaving office.

A study of 35 cases of democratic backsliding from 1991-2021 found that people were successful 51.7% of the time when a civil resistance movement was taking sustained action. Without civil resistance? Success plummeted to just 7.5%. Sustained civil resistance is needed to protect our democracy.

This season, we're posting key reminders to guide our action in the coming year. First: We're currently living in an authoritarian breakthrough, a critical period when would-be authoritarians attempt to rapidly consolidate power, eliminate checks and balances, and operate with impunity. #resist
