I made Mom’s roasted leek & potato soup on Sunday & have been enjoying eating it ever since. Today’s chopping & shoveling left me ravenous. Appetite remains the best spice, though cracked pepper, sea salt, fennel, & parsley are pleasant complements to this hearty soup, with a dollop of ricotta.

I shoveled us out, & then I helped my neighbors. I worked with a father of 3 from Kentucky whose plain speech, work ethic, & common sense reminded me of my own Iowan relatives, & helped a dad from upstate NY open an alley. Natural disasters always show us the best & worst of our fellow Americans.

Many streets around Capitol Hill are an icy mess. We saw multiple vehicles stuck in intersections. Side streets unplowed. Most cars plowed in. (It takes hours to dig one out.)
