I am a simple person who thinks that telling the truth about things is important. I watched the video footage of this shooting, and the killing is casual and unhurried. DHS and aligned political actors are very ready to present a story of rushed, panicked violence, and it just is not true.

An administration driven by greed, cruelty, and frankly a sort of empty-hearted boredom. The death of innocents so they can beat their chests and line their already fat wallets. Whatever comes next has to at least look like justice. We cannot just turn the page for the sake of one party’s comfort.

This is one of my games of the year. One of the best written games of all time imo, with simple but thematically elegant mechanics which help propel this coming-of-age narrative adventure forward. It’s just really properly good!

Nic & I wrote hundreds of events for Amberspire, so I can say (with some bias) that the game’s world is so considered & interesting, but allows the player to form their own narrative that is reflected back at them in the cities they build. I’m proud to work on it, and everyone should wishlist it!!

this is why amberspire is so exciting. imagine one layer that is less a city-builder and more unearthing systems in an alien urban ecology (like scavengers reign for city planning), then you have these fragments that remain open and realistically messy, suggesting a history much bigger and deeper.

for anyone who started following me after my @narrascope.org talk, this is the excellent visual novel that prompted me to ask everyone to raise their hand if they were familiar with june bugs. it is currently on sale, has june bugs, and is very worth your time.

the banished vault is one of the most consistent and cohesive games I can think of, just every aspect (art, sound, writing, mechanics) functioning together to create a consistent feeling (often of dread). even if it isn’t your type of game it is still something to behold and support.

for more established narrative folks — this is why we must refuse unpaid writing tests & tell studios why. also ask about rates + expectations before we recommend colleagues. in the absence of strong unions, we need to operate as a cartel

@essaygames.bsky.social manages to capture so much of what was special about NarraScope here (and a great primer on berrypicking to boot). truly a wonderful weekend, enriching and edifying via great presentations, conversations, open questions, and being intentionally welcoming and accessible.
