The Stratford War Memorial is probably the most moving one I have ever seen in Canada and it was sculpted by the man who would design the Vimy Ridge Memorial, Walter S. Allward. He completed these figures just before going to Vimy in 1922. The overcast skies yesterday added emotion to this moment.

On this day in 1891, Frank Rankin was born in Stratford, Ontario. In his Hall of Fame career, he recorded 63 goals in 21 games. As a coach, he led the Toronto Granites to Allan Cup championships in 1922 and 1923, and Olympic gold in 1924. He died in 1932.
