If you weren't tracking it, it's hard to explain how hyperventilated the NRA's rhetoric about looming government jackboots was while Barack Obama was president. It was their/LaPierre's central sales pitch.

Beyond helping establish DHS itself in 2003, Mr. Mitnick was a senate-confirmed Trump choice for General Counsel for DHS in his first term. This is a fairly common sort of setup for people who legally carry on a regular basis. I don't see anything abnormal about this load out.
