Arctic security can only be achieved together. This is why the proposed additional tariffs are a mistake, especially between long-standing allies. The EU and US have agreed to a trade deal last July. A deal is a deal. And when friends shake hands, it must mean something.

Territorial integrity and sovereignty are fundamental principles of international law. They are essential for Europe and for the international community as a whole.

We will always protect our strategic economic and security interests. We will face these challenges to our European solidarity with steadiness and resolve.

I spoke to the Secretary-General of NATO, Emmanuel Macron, Keir Starmer, Friedrich Merz and Giorgia Meloni. Together we stand firm in our commitment to uphold the sovereignty of Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark.

Given the significance of recent developments and in order to further coordinate, I have decided to convene an extraordinary meeting of the European Council in the coming days.

▪️ Readiness to defend ourselves against any form of coercion; ▪️ Readiness to continue engaging constructively with the US on all issues of common interest.

▪️ Recognition of the shared transatlantic interest in peace and security in the Arctic, notably working through NATO;   ▪️  Shared assessment that tariffs would undermine transatlantic relations and are incompatible with the EU-US trade agreement;

My consultations with member states on the latest tensions over Greenland reconfirm our strong commitment to the following:   ▪️ Unity on the principles of international law, territorial integrity and national sovereignty;   ▪️ Unity in support of and solidarity with Denmark and Greenland;

Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen made it clear: Greenland doesn't want to be a part of the United States, but Europe. Our message: Their state sovereignty is not for sale and is not negotiable.

Greenland and Denmark have both made clear: Greenland is not for sale and its sovereignty and territorial integrity needs to be respected. No threat of tariffs can or will change that fact.

The EU supports Denmark and the people of Greenland. We do so united in resolve. The measures against NATO allies announced today will not help in ensuring security in the Arctic. They risk the opposite, emboldening our joint enemies & those who wish to destroy our common values & way of life.

Tariffs would undermine transatlantic relations and risk a dangerous downward spiral. Europe will remain united, coordinated, and committed to upholding its sovereignty.

The EU stands in full solidarity with Denmark and the people of Greenland. Dialogue remains essential, and we are committed to building on the process begun already last week between the Kingdom of Denmark and the US.

We have consistently underlined our shared transatlantic interest in peace and security in the Arctic, including through NATO. The pre-coordinated Danish exercise, conducted with allies, responds to the need to strengthen Arctic security and poses no threat to anyone.

Decisions concerning Denmark and Greenland belong to Denmark and Greenland alone. Yesterday, European Parliament group leaders expressed Parliament's unequivocal support to Greenland and Denmark and called to uphold EU principles and law, international law and the NATO Charter.
