Unreal Fest wrapped yesterday, and thus so did the planned usefulness of the current Vending Machine Game (title TBD) prototype. Got pretty much the feedback I expected; it's early, lacks a lot of the expected UX, and many systems aren't in yet! But what I didn't get was any signs against the game!

Tekken 3 to the classics catalogue!!!!! ...they better have kept Gon haha

It's starting to sink in that today was the first time for me to be at an event with my own company name printed on the lanyard, while also wearing merch branding same company's logo, while also putting something I've made into people's hands to try. A good day, I'd say.

Starting to set up a post-level-summary screen after some feedback. Let's see if I can make it good enough in the next ~4 hours.

A slow past two days for me. Ended up taking a sickday yesterday, but have thankfully been feeling better today. Just fixing up some bugs before I let people test my prototype at tomorrow's local Unreal Meetup!

Not a lot happened this evening, but: + Random items dropping on ground for extra money + Switched $ for ¥ (lol) + small popup text that shows how much ¥ was added with each purchase + fixing some camera bugs It's something!

The schedule for Unreal Fest Stockholm next week is more packed than I had thought; there are like 9 different talks happening simultaneously for each time block, both days! Having some major choice paralysis here haha

The vending machine with anime nonsense gamedev continues this evening. More products added (courtesy of @derai.bsky.social!), some minor refactoring on how the items are handled internally, and just now the NPCs got an upgrade to move using Navmesh instead of simple lerps!

Finally got around to adding a slot selection visual (the white square), so people testing actually know which slot they're selecting 😅

Got around to making something along these lines hahaha This kind of camera swooshing could get really fun when I have time to put in more effort into this!

Cooked up a crude ticketing system for them as well, so they don't try to move to where someone else is currently moving to/standing. Still PLENTY to do regarding avoidance, them actually doing idle things while at a point, adding paths for NPCs just walking past, etc. Still, progress!

Minor thing to start off the day, but set the cutout (aka not-important) NPCs to face towards the active camera, to get closer to the original inspiration for them 😆

The game now has an implemented game loop! And a functional goal! Although neither are good yet haha But it's just in time for a friend to come over to try it out

oh wow. Not on my bingo card, but I'll take it! I already have the actual device, so it'll be fun to compare 😆

Going from nothing happening for years to not only having done two talks already since early summer, but also now finding myself signed up to do two more talks before end of the year! And all of them are slightly different haha! I'll have to break them down into some blog posts down the line.

Had just enough time to get a somewhat cleaner "demo" together before I head out for a friend's birthday celebration. It's still missing a lot of (any) flair and a lot (most) of the logic, but the vision is starting to show, I feel.

We'll see if I have time to hook up pricing and only enabling doing this if you're on specific screens by tonight, but just the ability of adding and removing slots went surprisingly quickly. Obviously later on specific slots will be able to be adjusted instead, but it's a start!

Back at it today! In trying to implement the money system properly, I unfortunately opened a can of worms regarding how I've not properly used other parts of the system yet. Need to take a few steps back and redo some of my item setup haha

Been a WHILE since I did proper UI stuff, so this took me longer than I want to admit, but the stock change buttons are hooked up to more of the data, and capped to the min and max values of each item. Now to add MONEY!

Experiments with more destructible in the game world. Reusing the fence mesh as that all I have right now. The idea is to make the world my dynamic. Though? #gamedev #indiegamedev

For the heck of it I tried getting a build onto a tablet so I could bring it around at events and stuff. Didn't work; apparently UE5 doesn't support the OS! But I was able to make it run on my phone! 😆

ok ok ok ok okay. So now the game has some level logic, and it can display what happened during the "day"/level. So far it's just the stock count, but more info is there - just not presented. Next up to move to an update stock screen of some kind, letting the player actually choose what to add!

Back on the VendingMachine game today after some weeks off. Finally starting to make sense of the StateTree in UE5! Having only used BehaviourTrees for NPCs in the past, it took a while to wrap my head around the basics, and I still have more to learn about it, but for now it's doing what I want!
